Tripath TA-2020 T-amp questions...

#1 Post by RubiconProSound »

I'm looking for a very small compact amp to mount inside my mixer case to run a small pair of DJ monitors I just built. Does anyone have any experience with the Tripath TA2020 T-amp?

I've seen a few expensive Oddiophile kit versions on the internet but I'm more interested in a quick and dirty cheap version to run my little monitors. I've found some cheap Chinese versions on Ebay that I'm thinking of trying out.

The Tripath amp information:

The cheap Chinese offerings on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/TA2020-20WX2-Class- ... 5913wt_934

What the amp will be powering... My new mini booth monitors.

I use the PE version to do almost exactly what you're doing. It's for a small monitor for my daughter to run her electronic drums through. It works very well. Those little rascals sound really good.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

Yup. It's a better deal to me to just buy it with the case, cords and powersupply ready to go than just buy the board and volume control alone. I keep batteries in one and use it ALOT for a portable test amp. Another I gave to my Pop for a nice office system powering little Energy monitors and a Bash 300 on a TAT. Get one.

I use an ebay 5 watt one to drive SLA's in my living room and I'm very happy. For goodness sakes, at 1 watt, I'll get around 93db and that's pretty loud for me in my living room. Of course the sub gets 100 Watts.

When I get some money saved up (after I build T39's and get additional Amps and such to use them), I want to buy this:

http://www.minidsp.com/home

I want the DSP, amp and digitial input package for $200.

I'm one ahead of you guys I have just ordered a minidsp and two Amp6-B from 41Hz to biamp a TLAH that I am putting together, together with the 12band parametric eq this should be sounding quite incredible.

sweet... let us know how that DSP works out.

I just bought the cheap Lepai offering from Ebay (right at $20 shipped) and will do a full review once I get it. I'm also curious to see what it will do on a pair DR200's just for giggles.

If I have some extra cash floating around I'll also try out one of the Muse/SMSI offerings to see if the better components makes that much of a difference in quality. Supposedly the SMT versions sound a little better than the "through hole versions". (although I'm skeptical....)

Here's the "Muse/SMSI" version, nice clean unit and much better looking board and components than the Lepai version...

...that silver chassis model is sweet, and the lowest price of that type I've seen. Thanks for that link!

I know I am dredging up a really old thread but I just wanted to let you all know that PartsExpress now has one of these cheapo Chinese tripath amps they are selling. It is one of the versions that is always listed on eBay, and it is comparably priced to the eBay ones. 2x20 watts with a power supply for $20 and no shipping from Hong Kong. They are out of stock at the moment.

Of course, I saw this right AFTER I ordered one from Hong Kong. :wall:

Buy this one and you can use 4 channels to drive the woofers and 2 channels for tweets. The price is right.

Item location: 深圳市, 广东省
Shipping is $25 and takes 4-5 weeks.

I liked this:
"Since this PCB uses 110-220 volts, if you want to use this PCB you have to be fermilliar with working with high and dangerous voltages."

I'm not sure I am fermilliar enough with 110-220 volts to be comfortable with this.

It's got the power supply built onto the board. That's why the price is right.

You just need to be careful wiring it up, that's all.
