Crown XTi 1000 - good for a Tuba HT?

#1 Post by psg »

Hi all,

I have seen many threads about the Crown XTi 1000, but none of them mention its problem driving 4 ohms loads at low frequencies. It is said to max out at 20 Volts into 4 ohms (100W) at 20 Hz.

http://www.crownaudio.com/forums/index. ... topic=2438

It this not an issue with dynamic content?
Have members used it to drive a Tuba HT?

The options that I am considering are:
1- miniDSP and Behringer EPQ1200 combo that uses RCA connectors
2- Behringer DSP1124p and EP2000 comb, switching from RCA to balanced between the receiver sub out and the EQ processor.
3- Crown XTi 1000 with integrated DSP for parametric EQ.

Yeah, neither can a 1124p though.

I was more concerned about the power drop at low frequencies.

Where is the signal for the HT coming from? Does it not have an EQ?

The XTi's are a lot of amp and DSP in one. If you aren't going to use all the DSP, they work out as expensive.

That thread appears to show pretty good evidence! It isn't what it is designed for, it's expensive for what you need it for and there are probably better alternatives.

IIRC, the 1124 is not very good, lots of signal bleed but I can't remember where I got that info from. I've probably used all there other Behringer EQs and the 2496 was the only one that was any good.

For what you are thinking of spending, have you considered an AV receiver that has it all already?

+1 on what Chris said. Also, the Xti's have a class D design that saves weight. You pay for the high tech. But it's completely irrelevant in the home. Why not just get an old iron amp if you really need a separate sub amp. The Crown XLS line is cheap now that the new drivecores have arrived, good value. Behringer EP amps are even cheaper, should be plenty for home use. I'd be afraid to let a few hundred watts loose on a THT. My tiny little T18 shakes the house (brick walls, 1 ft reinforced concrete floors) with less than 100W, the THT goes at least a full octave lower. Structural damage may occur when running at full power, no joke.

Well I guess I'll find out soon how little power this needs!

I was going to get the XTi 1000 used for $275. My alternative is either a 1124p or a minDSP for EQ, following by an EPQ-1200 or something like that, so such a combo actually costs more. But I guess I'll start by powering it with an unused hk avr-325 receiver I have which gives me about 135 W into 4-ohms, before I go out and buy a pro amp for this. I'll measure it with REW before I buy into the EQ, just in case I don't really need it. Thanks all!
