New Yamaha 01V User

Well, after a whirlwind gear sell-a-thon in which I sold 6 items in just over a week, I'm supporting DJPhatman's fire sale and moving on up to an 01V after having owned three different Behringer mixers. I'm taking a leap of faith based on all the good stuff I've read on here about the capabilities of this mixer and how it can help me downsize my rack (which is good because I had to downsize it to raise the cash to pay for the mixer). I've printed out a copy of the manual (which took at least one tree), and waiting (not so) patiently for it to arrive in a few days.

Any and all tips, hints, suggestions welcome--as long as they don't include replacing the 01V with SAC or anything like that

I converted to a 01V about 9 months ago. The biggest tip is: Experiment, experiment, experiment. Plug in a CD and play, play, play with the settings. There are soooooooo many options. The only way to really learn the menu navigation is to crack open the book and try to make things happen.

Get yourself used to making a channel selection then adjust something. That took some time for me and I had a number of oops, where I did it in the reverse order.

I was thinking on getting the Yamaha until last weekend when I was doing a gig where there were 2 bands
in 2 different rooms we play they play type deal. Anyway I knew the other sound man and he had the PreSonus Studio Live 16.4.2
and I was floored at how easy it was and everything you could do, He told me he bought 3 of them
and there's a 24 channel model coming out. I guess he can afford it with his rigs, also has the Yamaha Pm5D

I'm a PreSonus StudioLive fan, as well. It's very versatile and easy to understand. I'm slowly moving to SAC as I'd like to have a setup where I don't need to have copper running to my mix position. That said, most of the time it seems like I'm using my StudioLive to do a mix of monitors or multitrack recording and not usually FOH. It's my go-to mixer.

I set mine up with five identical presets with the exception of the effects. Each preset got a separate effect, reverb, slap-back, chorus, etc. At the end of a song I hit the effect 'off' button for clean talking, when the next song started I either hit effect 'on' again to keep the same effect or scrolled to a different preset for the new effect.
If you want to do this with a few global EQ presets for different rooms make each room the first digit in the preset, each effect the second digit.
Learn how to use the downward expander for gating the mic channels, rather than an actual gate. It's effective and seamless.

Learn the O1V and use it often. I tend to forget things about it. Learn how to use User Define Keys. This will help tremendous when you set up different channels. I rarely run the same band evey show, so being able to move around this quickly is a bonus, and the UDK allow you to do this.
