24.5 THTLP

#1 Post by roots600rr »

Going into this build I was undecided between the TT and the THT. I must admit it was a bit of a challenge to make a decision between the two. After reviewing both of them and the available space in the room the THT was selected.
My goal is to outfit a 15 x 20 theater with LCR and a sub for under $500. I had a Infinity subwoofer with a plate amp to help keep the cost down.

The Build:
The build was pretty much straight forward... If you have built a BFM cab before, this one is no different. When the pieces are cut you really get a sense of how big the THTLP really is. I used Auraco ply from Lowes and it was warped badly, these were the "good" pieces that I sorted out of the pile :cussing: . I can’t express how critical it is to get a hold of good ply, perhaps lumber yards or kitchen fabricators. Most of the time spent was tooling around trying to get the panels straight.
The gasket around the recommended Dayton driver is VERY thin and may cause sealing issues so i added a layer of felt.

Listening impressions:
Once the driver chamber was leak tested and sealed up it was time for the test. I used my laptop and SigJenny to send different frequency signals to the amp attenuating with my pc's sound card. When the THTLP was placed in its final position I watched a series of movies and listened to some reference tracks. The THTLP is very efficient and the response is smooth and seems effortless. The reproduction of the signals sound so great I’m tempted to unplug the other 7 speakers :hyper: . THTLP runs away from the LCR without the amp getting warm. I originally planned on strapping transducers under the seats but it is clearly unnecessary as the THTLP shakes everything in the room. During testing, the volume knob on the 100Watt RMS amp never went past half way. IMO, There is absolutely no need for greater low frequency volume.
Next up is a 9 driver / tweeter SLA and two 8 driver 12 tweeter TLAH’s.
If I were to do it again I would definitely find some better ply and get a finishing nail gun for those hard to screw places like all the bracing.
All in all, another awesome design… Thanks Bill.

What locations did you try the THT LP in, and what made you settle on the final location?
