DR 300

#1 Post by djbamm1 »

I have been a member of this forum for a while now and I decided to post this review because I dont think many of you are using this design. I run a D.J. business here in Louisville Ky. I also do touring work for a few local and national acts. That being said I knew I wanted "big boy" sound as with the arenas we are mostly on EAW and Turbosound rigs so the Dr 300's looked to be right up my alley .I formally worked at a cabinet shop and I still have access to the shop and CNC milling equipment. The build was initially slow as I CNC milled the baby butts and horn throat but the majority of the parts were hand milled. I loaded the first two with Magnum 12"s and the nsd 2005's.I tested them in a biamp config. with the lowcut at 80hz and the high at 1.2khz with a 24db slope. I had 300watts rms to the highs and 750 watts rms to the mid. That may be a bit much but those are the amps I am renting right now and I have not had any problems as long as I compress and limit.Let me tell you I dont have RTA testing but these things are loud and clear and next week I am purchasing a driverack so they will be dialed in even more. The top end was a bit harsh at first but with some EQ I got it to drop back in the mix more. I use a total of four now the second two have the same high freq. section but with Definimax's.. In my opinion it is one thing to say a speaker will do a certain amount of people but when you get a venue full of rowdy loud krunked up hip hop fans you have to be able to cut through them to get to the back of the venue. This is the only DR I will own as i have not tried the other designs but mine is not broke so I wont fix it. I can haul these by myself but they are heavy but no more than the Yorkville Unitys that I was renting. I also use scaffolding to elevate them my machinist friend is working on an aluminum rigging stand to replace my scaffolding. Also I put perforated metal grills on mine and bent the edges to tuck back 1/2 inches on a standard metal brake. I also used Duratex with the pressure pot sprayer at the shop and these look just like the touring grade speakers I thought I could never afford I plan on building a total of 8 of these by May 07 Because of Kentucky Derby weekend. It gets real serious here that weekend.I am not knocking any of the designs I just felt that the 300's were being overlooked so I wanted to share my experience with mine. Thanks for reading.
