Need amp suggestions: 2 Tuba 24s; 2 OT12s

#1 Post by speakernoob »

I'm not too familiar with the techie stuff when it comes to speakers, so I need some help figuring out which amps will work for my setup.

I have two Otop12s with Delta Pro 12as in them

and two Tuba 24s with BP102s

I use these speakers mainly for dance parties so I don't need amazing fidelity so much as amps that give me the most bang for the buck. I heard someone on the forum mention subharmonic synthesizers. Is it something I should consider for the Tubas? I'm not sure if they're worth adding to my system but it seems like a cool idea because the bass is my favorite.

Thanks and I'm looking forward to your feedback,
Noob

Agreed. If you end up going to 3 (or even 4 would be OK on one side of the Crown XTi) you might bump it up to the XTi 2000.

Another +1 for the XTi. I'd say start with the XTi1000 if the budget is tight, just add another one later on if and when you want to expand to 3 or 4. Added benefit is you can then start running the tops stereo. There is also a good chance that used XTi's are coming down in price in the near future, with the new generation of affordable lightweight power amps (Crown Drivecore, Peavey IPR, Behringer EPQ).

The XTi's cost more than some other new amps, but with the integrated DSP there's no need for external crossover/limiter so it ends up all equal in the budget, and still saves a rackspace.

The XTi does seem like a good deal. I'm definitely going to get one for the Tubas.

I've heard a lot about bi-amping and want a separate amp for the OT12s. I can't really afford to buy another XTi for them and I feel like its wattage would be overkill anyway.

Any ideas for an amp? I read on the forums that its good to have external crossovers for the speakers. So I guess I'm looking for a cheaper, less powerful amp than the XTi 1000 that still has good DSP.

Also, if you have a used amp that you're looking to sell let me know!

Yes your system is biamped, as in it needs an electronic crossover and discrete amplification.

You can do this all in mono with one XTI, it has dual amp channels and a bunch of electronics built in. Lots of folks run mono anyway as it's so difficult to get realistic stereo coverage outside of your loungeroom.

Thanks for the advice Greg. You're right, stereo isn't very noticeable in the places I play music.

but incase I buy another amp, what should I get to send one signal to multiple amps?

probably your cheapest, dual amp choice would be a pair of Behringer EP 1500 for around 250 each, or a pair of crown xls 402ds, for 250 each again.

Of course, if you can find used amps you'll be better off. The price here is 500 dollars, new, WITHOUT external crossover (Behringer DCX is a good piece of gear: 300 dollars). This brings your total price up to almost 800 dollars, which is around the price of buying 1 xti 2000 for subs, and 1 Xti 1000 for tops, which will be fine for running like... 6-8 T24s, and 4 Ot12s hahaha.

That would be the function of the active crossover ( If I understand what you are asking )

Yes, and beware that for all the bells and whistles of the XTI series, they don't allow a processed signal to be sent to another amp, only the dry full range.

So with two of them you need a crossover as well.

But one amp is plenty for the 4 cab setup. One XTI does EQ, with limiting for tops and subs. No other equipment necessary.

with 2 you dont need a crossover, you just have to run the same crossover settings to both. if you have both linked with system architect you are fine.

+1 I just picked up a 3rd XTI 4000 for $400 bones in mint condition off of craigslist. That bring my average cost for 3 XTI 4000 to @ $410 each. Hunt ebay, craiglist etc. They are out there. When you see one, don't wait and buy it

I'm still thinking of bi-amping the system. I want to get the xti 1000 for the Tubas and put a high and low pass filter on those because I've heard it really improves their performance.

For the OT12s I'm thinking of getting the xls 1000 because it has an integrated crossover. It seems that it can only put either a high or lowpass filter on each channel but OT12s only need a lowpass filter right?

!!!! :(

I waited for a while and kept trolling... even setup alerts on CL and ebay's ijjikijjiki or whatever site. Saw a couple XTi 6000s some through.

I bit on a $299 XTi 2000 from Guitar Center used.
