T39s, Lots of compliments tonight

#1 Post by 0x15e »

Tonight, I ran my two Tim Ard built T39s for a dubstep / drum 'n' bass party and have never gotten more complements on them.

They're 13" internal width and 8 ohm BP102 loaded. I ran them off half a QSC GX5 amp, using a DR260 for a crossover / limiter. They were corner loaded.

The club usually has a couple of 18" box things run off some 1600W amp and we completely disabled all that and ran mine instead. They sounded fantastic.

I think they must still be breaking in because it took about an hour for them to really sound right. Nothing else really changed about the setup but it went from sounding good in a 10' radius in the middle of the room to sounding awesome all over the place.

I really want to build two more now.

Rock On! Thank you for posting feedback on your setup... I am still trying to figure out if people like these subs or not. I am currently building 2 dual BP102 loaded T24's @ 30 " wide.

When you get your next pair built, please inform us on how all 4 sound!

For reference, a 3012LF single @ 30" wide will have more output, weight less, and cost about the same.

Great review.

I have ten T39's built to that same spec. It is downright impressive what a pair can do, especially in a corner.

That's a bit odd. An hour either way on the break in does not make much difference. I measured a little over +2dB from "out of the box" to "100 hours of use". Not nothing, but hardly enough to have the effect that you noted.

If this was the first use, I would guess that over the hour you learned how listen to the system...or the master volume went up over that same hour.

Seriously man, if you're going to build the 30" is absolutely no reason why the 3012 should not be used. If you wanted 15" bp102's then that would be something completely different, but other than that, use the 3012.
Built:6 t39, t18, 4 Jack10, 2 autotuba, 2 SLA,2 wedge, 2 TT, 2 Tritrix, curved sla, 2 otop212, 2 SLA pros, Ported 8" sub, 2 ported 210, dual ported 8" sub

Yeah, I'm really not sure what to make of it. It's not the first use but they don't have 100 hours yet. I think I've used them at maybe 5-6 parties for an average of about 6 hours each.

I've only really noticed this at the last two parties. Things start kind of awkward and boomy but the bottom end fills out with time. I just sort of attributed it to the drivers getting warm and loosening up a bit but I'm sure the master level and other factors were involved.

How many people are in the room during the "boomy" part, and how many are there when the "bottom end fills out"?

About the same, a few people milling around. Most people were hanging around the bar, which was through a large opening in another room. It never really went from empty to packed or anything.

Comparing the very beginning and end of the night (room totally empty), you could tell the difference. Though the master level was definitely higher at the end.
