Amp for Tuba HT

#1 Post by krbass »

I just ordered the plans for the tuba ht sub and am building 2 36"x36"x36" cabs. I am planning on using the 15" dayton DVC 385-88 that is recommended. Will a behringer EP4000 be an good choice to power both or are there better options?

I have no experience with the Behringer amplifier product. So I can't say otherwise to help you out.

I power my home theater sub with a Crown K2...and it is complete overkill.

EP series are nice amps, but they're a bit overkill for home theatre. The fans are also a bit noisy. The Bash 500w plate amp is a bit less money, quiet, and designed for subs. Build a container for it, put it in your HT rack or behind it, and run a wire to the cabinet (i.e. don't install it in the cabinet itself). Keeping it with the other gear minimizes the risk of ground loop hum.

Not that you'll need 500w with that cabinet... you don't want to destroy your house after all...

If you go with the bash, buy the one from the actual manufacturer as it has more features, not the one made for PE http://www.oaudio.com/500W_SUBAMP.html

Why pay more for less? The Bash is 2/3 the price with more features.

The bash from PE is out of stock till 8/31, thats way to long for me to wait to fire this bad boy up. What are the major differences between the oaudio and bash from PE? With a plate amp will I even need an EQ or subsonic filter?I am trying to reach as low a freq as possible for movies. Sorry for all the questions but I am a bit new to all this :)

The Bash/OAudio has more features for less money. You may not "need" EQ or filters, but you might find performance is better with them than without, and when it's less money to get an amp with them, there's no reason not to. The amp you linked is $300 plus ship, the Bash/Oaudio that gilscales linked to is $230. Same power, more features, lower price. It's a no-brainer.

Because there are often room acoustics problems and variation in subwoofer performance - EQ can help.
LFE below 20Hz is extremely demanding, can damage speakers and is for all practical purposes imperceptible - so often it is a good idea to have a infrasonic filter.

:? that's a lot of money there for HT. This is what I'm using. http://home.comcast.net/~jhidley/

They should be be around $50 after shipping is added. If you get two, you can bridge them. or if running the dual coil, just hook them up accordingly. It has a phase knob, with built in HP, however, it is set at 30hz by default, but can be changed by changing some components. And best of all, it has a 24db/octave slope on the LP.

All the documentation you would need to make any mods to it in the website itself and then there's areally big thread about the closeout items, so you might want to look through that as well http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/vendors- ... hread.html

If i remember correctly, he's in California, but i have no idea on what it costs to ship to Australia. You might want to hit up Harley or some other of our members there, but from what I've gathered, the shippign rates are ridonkulous.
