T36 Dual 12 cabinets up and running

#1 Post by JReynolds »

I brought the two T36 dual 12 cabinets online yesterday. The infamous Definemax 4012HO driver shortage of 2006 delayed getting the cabinets up and running.

Having acquired the final driver I got the cabinets going Tuesday; minus corners and rubber feet. I coated them with Duratex mixed with a synthetic sand provided by Acrytech. The finish is nice and rough. Though they are not designed for it, big subs get walked on, stood on, and have lots of crap stacked on top of them; the rougher finish helps grab onto shoes and gear just a little better keeping slips, falls, and damage to a minimum (That’s the theory anyway).

There isn’t much I can say about the sound of these that hasn’t been said already about Tuba subs. They kick some serious butt and go low. This particular model armed with two Eminence Definemax 4012HO drivers happens to kick A LOT OF BUTT! The sound is very assertive. The amount of output for the given pack space is staggering. If you love kick drum, you need these.

I ran them with a Carvin DCM2500 in stereo being fed signal from a DRPA. I ran most of the practice with the HPF set at 40Hz. SMACK! LP filter was set to 100hz. Lowering down the filter to 30Hz got things nice and tingly but I didn’t get time to fool with any super low tones.

I can’t say enough about the 4012 driver, the things are incredible for the amount of abuse they can take the output they deliver. Having two per cabinet is a treat that has to be experienced to be appreciated.

In depth review will come after they get a couple gigs through em. Pics coming soon.

I've been thinking of building one (or several) of those...

I'm curious - Is there a difference you can hear, feel, or see between the double 12 vs. the single 15?

What width did you build...the 26 minimum or the full 36?

Thinking of building a couple dual 12 Tuba 36's? Trust me, you need these

The cabinets are 27" in width. They are replacing my T36V's which are 30" wide.

The bass has more of a pounding shove to it, where the T36V's have a creepy shake eveything presence. These cabinets are violent. I ran the gain up last night for a bit. I let em rip with some recorded music and kept raising and raising the volume until I got the amp clip light to flicker on a bit. Very impressive.
