Favorite place to buy speaker cables

#1 Post by Michael Lemke »

So I've bought all this great hardware to build a wicked set of DR's. I'm running through the checklist and find that I need to add another 30% to the budget just to buy speakon cables to put it together. I know its a one time cost, but they just don't seem worth THAT MUCH money...ok - I feel better now (steps off the soapbox).

I'm curious to know what are some of your favorite places to buy quality cables?

I checked out PE's site which leads me to two questions.

1 There are different gauge wires: which would be appropriate for my current setup? I assume the needs would be different if I were pushing thousands of watts through the wires.

2. How long is too long for that given wire size? I understand after certain distance resistance builds up. I don't think I need anything longer than 25 feet, but I'm new to this end of things...

What I do for speaker cable is the local electrical supply shop. I get 14g two conductor SJ cable. I usually buy it by the spool. I haven't gotten any in a while so I know prices have changed. Buy your connectors from here for a better price than you will get on partsexpress. Or even go ahead and get the already made cables from them as well. Great people to do business with.

If you buy Speakon cables, beware the Asian knock-off connectors. They are nowhere close to Neutrik quality.

That said, I own a number of Asian long cables, 25~100 feet. It was cost effective to replace the cheap connectors with Neutrik Speakon as required.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

Okay, me too! http://www.speakerhardware.com/products.php?cat=124

Not the cheapest, but they're good quality cables, especially the xlr's.

I've ordered special order cables from bayoucables.com in the past, they seem pretty good but it takes a long time to get your order. I recently bought a load of 12/2 speaker cable from redco.com, got no complaints so far.

+1.

Speaker cables are rather easy these days to assemble with the new speakon ends.Your local electrical shop should have the cable and PE has the Speakons at a pretty reasonable price.

If you dont want to make them you could always purchase them but you will pay the price for anything pre-made.

The CBI brand Leland sells are very good quality cables.

My approach has always been to purchase whatever I could in bulk. The first roll of Mic cable I purchased was a roll of 22ga. Belden shielded and if I remember correctly I got a 1000 ft roll! Then I bought bags of 100 count Switchcraft XLR ends and proceeded to hack and solder! Made as many different sizes I could! I still have cable on that dam roll!

Speaker cables I usually buy 10/2-12/2-14/2 SOOW or SJOW depending on whats available and the current price of copper. Again I would get at least a 250ft roll as I dont believe it even comes in a smaller roll anyways. Under that you pay by the foot costs.Same with power cables.

If you only need 2 cables then I would simply buy them.If your running a sound company it pays to have cable footage in stock at all times.
