WH8 vs. WH6

#1 Post by DaveK »

I built 4 of the new Wedgehorn 8 design to upgrade my old Wedgehorn 6 monitors. I did a side-by-side listen test and the WH8 definately has more punch in the bass. It's not a WH10, but you can still run bass in the monitors with it. I did last Friday night with a high pass about 100Hz. It doesn't have the visceral impact of a bass rig, but I can tell what note I'm playing (or not playing :-) ).

As you can see, I did not outfit them with melded tweeter arrays. The array and the supports seem too prone to damage in a speaker that spends it's life on the floor. (Full grills would help, but I don't build my cabs with grills.)

P.S. A Sterilite 45 gallon tote fits 2 WH8 perfectly and even has wheels on one corner.

DaveK, did you put Beta 8's in your Wedgehorn 8's and did you build the full crossover network?

I had a similar experience though I simply upgraded my WH6's with an 8" driver.

They were thin, definitely vocal only monitors before. They work decently well for full instrumentation with the 8" driver. I can't crank them super hard like you probably can the WH10, but they do well enough for sane stage volumes.

+1 on the horn mounted 1005's. I actually did a side-by-side comparison and thought the crossfiring tweets had smoother response across the horizontal axis than the melded array. There was a narrow hot-spot when you were dead on to the melded array. The cross-firing also seems to have wider dispersion. As long as you can see a tweeter, you can hear it clearly.

First, nice looking WH8s. Second has anyone else done a side-by-side comparison of the two
tweeter setups or possibly some RTA??

Thanks,

Robb

I was looking at the plans - would adding another peizo on each side make much differance ??

Very little as far as level, the main difference would be reduced vertical dispersion.
