Possible new Piezo for the UK

#1 Post by RichardH »

Since the recommended piezo from CPC has gone through the roof in price, us UK-ers have been looking for alternatives. A fellow forum member over on Finnbass found this - also from CPC - Pulse PLS00306. The spec looks very similar:

MPT016
Power Rating 225W (4Ω) / 115W (8Ω)
Frequency Response 3-20 kHz
Sensitivity (SPL 2.83V/1m) 91
Overall Dimensions (WxH) 145
Cut Out 98x55

PLS00306
Sensitivity (1W/1m): 91dB
Maximum power handling: 100W
Frequency response: 2-20kHz
Mounting depth: 50mm
Dimensions (WxH): 145 x 67mm

...But of course that doesn't always mean anything. Anyone got any experience of the Pulse model?

No experience (I'm in the USA) but looking at the specs, the Pulse appears to be 50% wider at 145X67mm. That is 47mm on the long side. Too big, I think, to be usable.

Thanks for the feedback. However, I'm not sure about that - I suspect my cut and paste of the (not directly equivalent) spec listing may have caused confusion. The MPT spec I listed shows the cutout as 98x55, rather than the external dims - I think that assumes it's surface mounted.

Looking further at the MPT-016 detail page it states
External Length / Height:67mm
External Width:145mm
- which i read as 145x67mm - the same as this other option.

The only way to know is to test a pair side by side.

Indeed - I was wondering if anyone had done so already.

I'll do that at some point - I have a couple of the "normal" type already.

might I add that if they're the one with the little phallic prjection(what....that's the first thign that came to mind) in the middle of the horn and are bigger than the 3x5's they are prone to rattle and will render the array useless. Believe me, they might no do it at first, but they might sooner or later. of course, I got my 5x7's at $1/each, so who knows, those you listed might never have that problem.

The more I look at them, the more the Pulse piezos look to be identicle to the Pyle piezos in the USA.

But I agree, they would need to be tested side-by-side with both the MPT016 and the Goldwood 1016.

Hi Chris - nice one - I was thinking I might get a load, as I could always offload them on eBay without loss if they weren't quite right. However, if you're offering then I'll leave it to you to be the guinea pig :D

Cool. When you've tested them, just chop 'em up and mitre them into a couple of melded arrays and post 'em down to me won't you - there's a good chap...

Here's the three models that I have. I think the more expensive CPC model is the same as the Monacors that I have purchased through Sabbelbacke (Germany), these are good. Visually, Leland's piezo's are very similar to the Monacors. The cheap crap model looks similar to the cheap CPC model that Richard and Chris found. Curious to learn what response you find, Chris.

Left to right: cheap crap, good Monacor MPT016 (Sabbelbacke), good US piezo (from Leland)

I got some of the cheap ones knowing that the response would be no good. They do fine as cheap material to practice cut & glue. Better destroy some €0.40 drivers than €3 on MyFirstMeldedArray (tm) :chainsaw:
