Three J110's are more than plenty loud enough for a large stage with decent FOH and will also be adequate for some serious backline.

That rich J110 tone gets even better with 3 cabs, plus the height factor gets the sound closer to ear level...plus looks impressive!

If you're serious about tone and volume for elect bass - which going by your posts you are - then for a top/sub, it'seither OT12/T39 or ( better still ) DR250/T39.
Harley, for my own edification, would you mind elaborating on why you prefer the OT12 over a Jack when used a with a T39 as part of a bass rig? I understand that the Jack is a full range cabinet and would need to be rolled off somewhere around 100 Hz to stay out of the sub's way, but that doesn't seem like a big deal given that my current head has a variable crossover. How would this be much different than what Gauss did by placing a T39 under his combo? Is this a horn loaded thing? :?

Then just build a T39 and keep with the J110s.

But, seeing you have been already bitten by the building bug, why not just make another J110 anyhow, and if you need to later on, a T39.

OK, so a T39 will work under a J110. That's what I was hoping to confirm. My plan at the moment is, as you've suggested, to build a third Jack and see how things go. Realistically, two J110s are probably adequate for most of my needs, but I always like to have more than I need...just in case. And, yes, I've been bitten by the building bug. Thanks for your input.

Yes, my primary amp has a built-in crossover. However, I just looked at the manual and found that the minimum crossover frequency is only 200Hz, and I know that's way too high for a sub. And so it goes. Since I've already decided on building a third J110 for now, I'll keep the T39 in the back of my mind as a possible upgrade down the road.

Well, I bit the bullet today and started another pair of J110s. I'd originally intended to build just one, but since I had to buy a full 4x8 sheet of plywood it made sense to cut out the pieces for a second cabinet at the same time. Do I need four cabinets? Probably not, but it'll be nice to have them if I do. In fact, I'm really excited about having a rig which I can scale up or down depending upon the gig (I anticipate using two or three most of the time).

So, now that I know what one J110 sounds like and how adding a second really kicks things up, what can I expect with three and four? And, yes, I do use earplugs

Try this on: use 2 for your bass rig and 2 for the PA.

Yeah, I thought of that. However, both of my bands already have PA or it's provided by the house, so I really wouldn't have the opportunity to use two of the J110s as PA speakers. Besides, if I ever needed PA cabinets, it'd be more fun to just build a couple more :)

Excellent! [Cue maniacal laugh.] I hope that wearing Depends won't make my butt look big onstage. I suppose I could also eat a lot of cheese before a gig.
