Panel Jig, cut line centered or not?

#1 Post by span »

I don't see this clearly in the plan, but do you make the panel jib with the cut line centered on the board or off to one side? What's the advantage if not centered?

With a smaller jig off-center allows greater support of a large piece being cut when placed to one side or the other.

I am doing the full 40x30 size and using it for a TT. Any point to make the jib off-center?

Btw, the table saw does have more support on the right than the left, like most ones I've seen. If off-center, more to the left or right? Sorry, real amateur here.

It's "jig" with a "g"

What size is your table saw's top? That's what would make me determine where the cut line would go. If you have a large contractor/cabinet/hybrid saw, then I'd just center the cut. If you have a small portable TS, then I'd put the cut line towards the left side, because I typically make my cuts on the left.

Why? Because the blade takes off 1/8"... so you line up your mark on the board you're cutting with the end of the edge/push guide. So then, the big heavy panel is on the left side with my hands on it, and the right side (which has less support) gets the cut off.

bzb, nice catch with the spelling, and thanks for the tip.

I also just realized the source of my confusion. The third page of the printed instructions for the panel jig somehow fell away from the pile, and I was trying to make sense of the it all w/o it. Now that I found it behind the desk, it all started to make sense. Hopefully, start cutting wood tomorrow.
