Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
Cloth speaker grilles are tough to do... and really time-consuming... but I'm really glad I made one, it looks sharp: http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn68/CaseFaceMcGee/Bill%20FitzMaurice%20Omni212TB%20build/more%20%20pictures/IMG_2282-small.jpg I got the cloth as straight and tight as I was able...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
I'll give that a try. My other idea is to squirt a bit of silicone into the joint and move the handle up and down as it sets, so it would act kind of like a bushing instead of gluing the handle in place.

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
Thanks Bill. I've been using the EQ flat so far, but I had the vintage loudspeaker emulator knob up at about half - that may be what's causing it to push so much power. The rest of this week, I hope to get the crossover back together and do some more testing, make the speaker grill cover, and get an...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
The cab performed admirably at the wedding gig on Saturday. During our soundcheck/rehearsal with the singer, I had my volume knob set at a conservative level - about 9:00. A guest at the wedding, who is an experienced sound guy at the university, said that during the soundcheck the bass was a little...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
One of my good friends back at school is an Engineering Physics major, pretty far along in his degree progress. He's going to be checking all of my current crossover's components to check if any are bad in some way, as well as checking my wiring. If it can be made to work, it'll just sit around unti...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
I removed and reassembled the high-pass filter off the board, with the coils as far apart as the leads allowed from the board and each other, with their axes perpendicular and not pointing towards each other or in the path of the coils still on the board. I checked the wiring before, during, and aft...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
Starting the process of disassembling and reassembling the crossover. Here's a better picture of it:

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
Or, better yet, have Leland make it for you. I'm sure he'd be glad to, plus he'll probably test it before he sends it to you. Worth the price, IMVHO. I was considering that when I ordered the parts, but I thought I would save a few bucks and learn something by doing it myself... my guess is my awes...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
No surprise that, with all that stuff on one board. That's why I recommend that each filter be mounted on its own board, so that you're less likely to get confused with all the components and wires. That's one change that I plan on making - splitting up the three boards, mounting them separately. I...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
You were right DJPhatman, it is definitely a crossover-related issue, but for the life of me I can't figure out where. I have three crossover pictures here that show the crossover and the mess of wires currently surrounding it. I would throw together labels in MSPaint, but I've gotta be at work in l...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
Thanks, that's a task for tomorrow or Thursday. Is there a way to tell if I fried a cap or coil or something? I did a cursory check of the crossover today and didn't see any issues, so next chance I get I'll make a schematic just from looking at my crossover and compare it to the one in the plans.

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
I spent some time tracking down the buzzing that I heard, and as far as I can tell the mid driver is fine. The two side handles, on the other hand, were buzzing like crazy. I took them off for now, to find other noises they may be covering up, and I've gotta figure out how to eliminate their rattlin...

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
Getting two new hurricane nuts today - I managed to mess up the threads. The grill should be built in the next few days.
Edit: also getting different 1" screws for the top handle and wheels - wood screws look funny there.

Re: Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy
It wouldn't surprise me if the crossover wasn't quite right, I'll probably be able to check it tomorrow. The cab worked great at rehearsal. I am in a swing band, competing against 5 trumpets who all think they are playing 1st  My Little Mark III was set with gain and master volume just over 9:...
