Unbalanced to Balanced Transformer Recommendations?

#1 Post by Radian »

I've got a DCX and spare K2 sitting idle and thought about placing them both into HT subwoofer duty for new project on the way. I'd like to connect the DCX and amp to my HT receiver on an interim basis using either a MCM 555-8485 or a RDL TX-AFC1F. Total cable run for the interconnects will be less than a foot. I'm just going from the receiver, immediately into the DCX, then over to the amp right next to that. I understand that connecting unbalanced to balanced gear is not normal/ideal practice. All the gear is parked right next to one another and share the same outlet. Anyone have experience with either product? I've taken note of the RDL's simplicity, but what justifies this little gem's $80 price tag? I've also noted the MCM's solid reputation and cool price. I guess I'd need a really good reason to buy the RDL over the MCM. Any takes?

I've also considered the O-audio, but don't really want to part with $250 when I've got a grand in DSP/amp collecting dust.
Good food, good people, good times.

Couldn't you just use a direct box? They're $20-30 and simple to use. Most have pad switches and a ground lift, too. I've used direct boxes out of receivers before.

Otherwise, you might just try adapting from RCA to XLR somehow... I don't think it will matter if you only use the hot and ground pins (2 and 1, or tip/shield if you adapt through 1/4"). For such a short run and everything on the same circuit, you probably won't have a problem.

For using the DCX with consumer grade equipment, you can run it unbalanced. No need for transformers. See your DCX user guide for how to connect the XLR pins to make it run in unbalanced mode. The DCX will automatically recognize this type of connection and adapt inputs/outputs accordingly.

Same goes for the DEQ, so I do this when using my DEQ on home audio equipment. Works just fine.

Matt I looked into the DI box route. $11 bucks for a Pyle balancing transformer, can't beat that! 8)

Anton, if the solution was any closer to my snout, I might have mistaken it for lunch! :slap: Time to make a patch cord.

Thank you!

I believe the simple RCA-to-XLR adaptors should work fine.

+1 on the wiring.
-1 on the inexpensive (cheap?) transformer.

How much do you expect for $11? There's a reason the better DI's run for $150 and up. You may be able to compensate for the poor response of a poorly made transformer, but why bother when you can work without it? If you hook everything up and it hums, then I'd reconsider, but with the wiring short and equipment powered from the same outlet you shouldn't need it.
