paging DCX 2496 owners

I posted this on the bottom of the other thread I started earlier on limiters but I don't think it would of got as much as I would of liked it so I am now moving it to it's own.

Calling all DCX 2496 owners

OK
fine tuning the DCX........... Well lets just say figuring out.

I need to know if this stuff is right;
On the screen for the subs for limiters it reads
Thresh: -0.0. dB
Rel: (I got it at) 503

^^^right, please correct

Polarity phase ????Normal? <<<for subs/mains/monitors.

Input source screen, should it read 0.0 dB's for gain and what is the correct type for monitors? is it Mid or Mid highs?

X over points screen reads;
type; L-R48 type; L-R48
Freq; 135Hz Freq; 16.9Khz
^^^monitors/subs/ mains what should it read for each?

Dynamic eq;
Thresh; -0.1dB
Ratio; -2.0:1
Attack; 71m5
Release; 501m5

^^^^for subs/mains/ monitors what should this read?

I know I am asking a lot out of some but just think of it as a lot of questions I would of asked in about....a year all rolled up in one night. On this subject.

I thank anyone who takes the time and answers me and my stupidity. I think this is why my lead singer wanted to buy a destroyer. Cause things are not set right.
If I can get through this with the right settings I think I am on my way a lot better than I was a yr ago.

Yo.

I think the thresh is telling you the limiter is not engaged. The 503 (release) seems high.

Normally left on normal, unless you have a reason to reverse.
Scott Brochu wrote:Input source screen, should it read 0.0 dB's for gain and what is the correct type for monitors? is it Mid or Mid highs?
Best to leave it at 0.0 dB's for gain. The terms mid or Mid highs are just default names for the output you're looking at that can be renamed to whatever you like.

The type and Freq can be changed to whatever your needs are and changed using the parameter button. This example is telling you this output channel is high passed at 135 Hz and low passed at 16.9 Khz using steep slopes.

I wouldn't bother using Dynamic EQ, unless you really know what your doing. In other words, I never use it. :D

I am a novice at this also, but here's what I have for my T39's and DR250's that I used to have:

Input A:
- Gain: 0dB
- all EQ, delay, etc.: off

Output 1 (T39):
- Gain: 0dB
- Name: SUBWOOFER (I don't think the name really makes any difference other than just to help you identify what type of frequency range you're dealing with)
- Crossover Points: LR48 @ 46hz and LR48 @ 110hz
- all EQ: off
- Limiter: on, -20.7dB (threshold), 407ms (release)
- Polarity/Phase: normal
- Delay: off

Output 2 (DR250):

- Gain: -3.0dB (in my case, the tops outran the subs, so I reduced the output on the tops to compensate)
- Name: HI-MID (I don't think the name really makes any difference other than just to help you identify what type of frequency range you're dealing with)
- Crossover Points: LR48 @ 110hz and LR48 @ 20khz
- all EQ: off
- Limiter: on, -17.0dB (threshold), 407ms (release)
- Polarity/Phase: normal
- Delay: off

Like I said, I'm a novice and I can't necessarily tell you WHY everything is set up this way, but it seems to work well. Once I get my DR200's built and try my hand at doing some RTA measurements, I intend to try to use some of the EQ capabilities in the DCX to flatten things out a bit instead of relying solely on my graphic EQ, but for now I use the DCX purely for crossover and limiting.

Thank you WB and David.

What is L,R48?
And it tends to level out when set to but 6 and off. I do have less squeal when setting to L,R,6 or but 6. on the x over.

again thanks. Got a gig tomorrow .......well later today and want things to be right.

L/R48 is a slope of the cut-off frequency (or cut-in frequency), in this case it is 48db per octave...and that is very steep, but good to use with BFM gear. There are different types of slopes, in this case it is L/R (which also is the preferred).

LR (or Linkwitz-Riley) maintains an even frequency at crossover point as opposed to the Butterworth (thanks Sydney!) and is explained well here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linkwitz-Riley_filter

Because I have a misbalance in power between my subs and tops and don't have room to V-Plate in most venues, I apply a 3.0dB gain in signal for the subs. I also apply a small delay, though, I can't really tell a difference with or without it.

OK so the "But" I see in the screen is the buttersworth. Which is another word I am going to have to learn some day.
Thanks guys for putting up with my slow learning curve.

One important bit about LR filters is that they can induce phase issues at certain orders. Do your homework before applying to prevent problems.

I thought this only applied to passive crossovers where the inductance and reactance in the network can play havoc with the signal phase angle??

Not entirely true. Phase issues still result in the different orders of active filters but the newer digital/active types have those phase differences inverted by the opamps via the software resulting in phase linear outputs from most units.

Some other active units that are fixed slopes (non variable old 12db ASHLEYS come to mind) have their output inverted coming directly from the op-amps.

Run LR24 or LR48 and you don't have to worry about the phase issues. LR24 results in everything in-phase but 180degrees out of phase with the original signal and LR48 gets the phase back to in-phase with the original signal. Either works just fine, though I prefer LR48 myself for the tight slope. It helps keep the lows out of my OT12's that don't have much bottom end and the highs out of the subs. To my ears it was the cleanest sound in the system.

With all of your help I had the best sound in 4yrs, I shit you not.

It's about time!
There was A big fat ZERO on the feedback on the monitors WITHOUT the feedback destroyer.
SO that is going back.
The only problem my singer had was that he wanted a little more volume out of his 2 wedge 10's. I told him that he is at the threshhold of the volume and possible feedback.
I told him that he was on his own.

Looking at I see I have taken over on the sound department. I got; 2-T-39's. 4 Wedge 10's. and a O15TB on stage. :loler: Need some 200's now and I'll be all set.
