Stereo receiver for sla/tuba 18?

#1 Post by brncmp45 »

Hello

I'm looking for a stereo receiver to use with 2 sla and a tuba 18 sub.
Could someone recommend something?

I was thinking of using a car stereo head unit. One with a sub output going to a plate amp on the sub. Would I still need a crossover or lowpass filter? It seem that car stereo have so much more features ( cd, HD radio, mp3/ipod playback, and a lot smaller) than home stereo equipment.

I know that I'll have to work out a power supply, but I think that won't be to hard.

Don't go with a car stereo - for the same audio quality as a $200 home stereo A/V receiver you'd need to spend at LEAST $350-400, plus you'll need a clean 12v power supply, and you don't get the expandability.

Most decent home stereos nowadays will at a bare minimum have a line-level RCA jack for a sub out, some of the better ones will have a sub amp built in. In either case they should allow you to configure the x-over, and levels for the sub on the stereo. Unless you get something without these features you'll either need an active crossover or passive Low-pass and high-pass filters (remember, it's equally important to keep from sending those low frequencies to the high speakers....)

I don't have any recommended brands, other than to stay away from anything you'll find as a store brand at Radio Shack or Wal-mart.
