New Single Rack Space Amps

#1 Post by biodad »

My question about the new Carvin amps isnt so much about them but rather does anyone make a single rack space amp with
this amount of power that is road worthy and will hold up in war? Is it possible?

I do not need anymore amps but it is interesting if single space amps, four channels of 400 w at 8 ohms are dependable.
I suspect not. Carvin builds decent mid quality amps I think but they did use some cheap china made ribbon strips 4
or 5 years ago in their 2 rack space models. I bet all ribbon strips are china made now.
Did they shoot a shotgun into a Neuman at a foot away to rate these things or are they tested at a cheat frequency to get the ohms up?

Their specs
» Power: 4x440WRMS @ 8ohms, 4x780W @ 4ohms, 4x1290W @ 2ohms, 2x2575W Bridged @ 4ohms
» Active PFC Power Factor Correction
» Space saving lightweight 1-U frames
» High slew rate class D design
» Natural, pure-state amplification
» 2 ohm operation, 4 ohm bridged design
» For 70V/100V distribution systems
» Soft-Start 100-240VAC 50-60Hz
» PowerCON™ AC connector
» Front to rear cooling system
» Protect and Limiter circuits
» IEC60065 compliant, CB certified

PFC Power Factor Correction corrects the incoming AC power by synchronizing the AC voltage to the line current to reduce energy
consumption and heat, which produces substantially more power from the same AC input.

The LT5204 5150W 4 CHANNEL PFC POWER AMP features a single space 1U frame and is 2 ohms capable.

I'm a huge fan of big power and/or multi-channel amps in a single rack space form factor. Or, 8 channels in a 2RU form factor, which I currently use (Ashly NE8250PE)

At the moment, it seems Powersoft has the market cornered with 2 and 4 channel amps in a 1ru form factor, and they include high end features such as integrated DSP and Dante network audio built right into their "T" series amps.

I've had an eye on SoundTown amps. They have 2 single-rack-space amps that pique my interest. 4x650w @ 8Ω (claimed) for $480 and a 2x950w @ 8Ω (claimed) for $280. Downside's are untested/verified output and reliability and no integrated DSP. Price is right, though. And even if the power numbers are inflated, they may work well for the stuff we need them for here anyway.

Enjoying the drivers you sold me a couple years ago, BTW

These look like they come out of the same factory as 2 I have and use, now only if on mains power.
Here their name is DARE.

Because of the price, 1RU spacing and power figures, I thought they were worth a try.
4 years later, the 4 channel unit lost 1 channel (on genny), the 2 channel unit has been solid as a rock.

Stick with old iron for genny gigs, but these 2 + another in a 4 RU effects case that weighs, say, 20lbs....

edit: it's getting harder all the time to find small lightweight amps that don't end up with too much power! You can only limit so much...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Thomann in Europe have their D4-500 single unit amplifiers. Four channels, 500W each. This model has been around for years, well over a decade at least. There have been a few reports of early failure but mostly it seems to do well for the money. I noticed that there is now also a DSP version of the same amp. Or the DSP amp is just very similarly spec-ed.

Seth Greetings. I kept one T39 and it's all I need. Networks (sp?) built them very well.

Thanks to all for advice
