Titan 39 positioning for outdoor concert tomorrow
I have a concert tomorrow that has a concrete stage in a park. The face of the stage is approximately 5' high and the stage is quite wide (I'm guessing close to 65' across).
I am planning on V-plating the 6 Titan 39 subs I have for the first time at this event and have a few questions. Will the wall cause reflections and cancellations if I put the subs against it? Are there any recommendations (face the subs at the wall, or pull them a foot or two off the wall). Is there anything I'm not considering?

For the wall to have any effect it would have to be at least a half wavelength high, which is 14 feet at 40Hz, 5 1/2 feet high at 100Hz. Otherwise the low frequency waves will just go over it. At five feet high it's effect is negligible. Depending how wide the listening area is you may want to split the subs.

How would you recommend splitting the subs? I currently have: 4 x 15" wide LAB subs, 2 x 24" wide LAB subs, and 1 V plate.
Until now, I've ran 2 skinny and 1 wide per side at most events with them just standing upright next to each other. This has worked well for me so far. Tomorrow will be a practice run for me since I have an event next weekend that has 1500 people expected in attendance and I won't have in the other 4 subs I ordered from one of the builders in time... I'm hoping to iron out the details on placement etc. tomorrow so I'm ready for the larger event next weekend.

With a stage that wide, I'd split 'em and either stack 'em or put 'em side by side. Don't worry about the V-plate. Of course, you could lay 'em all on their sides at the center of the stage....but then I'd keep the mains a little tighter.

I have 4 more 15" speakers coming in about a month (hoping). I ordered them with 2 V-plates as well. I only have 6 speakers currently and 2 different widths so a second V-Plate would be a fun jigsaw puzzle to figure out - LOL
Looks like I may just end up going back to my normal for this one - running 1 wide and 2 skinnies side by side.

What if you have 2 15" on each side with the 2 24" v plated in the middle? Or 2x2 stacks of 15" in the middle with a 24" on each side? You could v plate them all, then.

I'd be very curious what Bill or Bruce have to say on this one. They may be too close together? I just had someone drive by and verify 70' across the stage.

If I remember the math, they would need to be within a quarter wave length of each other. At 100hz, that's about 3 feet. So, you'd need a string 'em out one-by- on their sides across the front with two of 'em head to head, then three feet on either side of that center two - you'd put two more head to head. That would be roughly a 25 foot spread of subs across the front.
If you were to do that, I'd bring in the mains until they were 5-8 feet outside of the sub line. That would still give you 35-40 feet of width to put a band in-between. Kinda' depends on what kind of crowd you are expecting. If there is a huge crowd, do two mono stack really wide. If most the folks will be in front, then tighten it up to the 35-40 span.

To find the wavelength of a frequency, divide the speed of sound in feet or meters per second by the frequency. Divide by 4 to identify quarter wavelength or multiply by 2 to get two wavelengths. The speed of sound varies based on atmospheric conditions. I've seen people use figures from 1115 to 1130fps in their calculations. Any will get you the ballpark answer. I have always used 1125, just because I personally find it easy to remember.

I use 1125 because it's easier to remember, and because the speed of sound isn't a constant. It varies with barometric pressure and humidity, so there's no need to be exact.

Event went perfect! There were a few rappers there so I was really concerned about getting the most out of my system without over-taxing it. Success on that account. Once I finally received the band riders... I figured out that I did not need to use even half the stage... I did end up V-plating the subs but pulled the mains way in. The best part was that there were a few teens in the audience who chose to experience sitting in the throat of the subs and enjoying a full body massage during one of the bands. The event was not well attended unfortunately, but part of the goal was to get the sound into the surrounding neighborhoods - that was a whopping success. On the big stage, I will note that my VRX look so tiny - LOL!
This past weekend I had another event - outdoor church service with about 1500 in attendance, but I went back to my old 3 per side for that one since there was no rapping involved. That one also covered perfectly, even with only 6 boxes. The church now wants to get a few for their new sanctuary they are in the process of building. (You could say that they were impressed). The 6 subs kept pace with 6 VRX without any issue - everything just worked.
