Otop 8 driver?
Otop 8 driver?
Heynow! It's a longer story, but a co-worker of mine was at an estate sale this past weekend and managed to pick up four BNIB Dayton MB820-8 for me at 15 bucks each! I'll avoid the runaround of asking which cab can I mash these into - I did some reading in here before the day of the sale & I'd love to plow on with two Ot8s for music playback. I'm happy to get em running & then I can swap in the Beta in a year or two if I feel the need - no worries about the work req'd if I need to modify the baffle, I'm good at weird stuff like that.
Now, the Qts is a little high, at .46 and the midrange response up to 2k is more or less flat, instead of rising to meet the xover point (I'm thinking melded arrays). My understanding so far is that with higher Qts I might have cabs that naturally sound a little boomy or have less sensitivity in the upper mids. I do have an ART Pro SMS226, which basically seems like a driverack that didn't sell too many up against the driverack - I hope I can get em sounding decent with eq but is there anything else I could do to compensate? Half an inch here or there in the rear chamber volume, without defeating the whole purpose?
If I'm overthinking that's obviously fair play as well. Cheers!
Otop8 Spec
Fs 60 - 85Hz
Qts .2 to .4
Vas 15-30L
Xmax 3mm+

Re: Otop 8 driver?
It will work, but as you noted the midrange will require EQ boost.
Re: Otop 8 driver?
Go for it man! We need some more OT8s around here
Do you think you would go for the melded array or CD horn?

I'd say melded arrays. The idea for these is for bbqs & smaller do's.

Nice one! The back of this car will fit 25" T39s.

Not trying to highjack an older thread, but in an effort to not make multiple posts on the same question...
Would this driver work as an upgrade to the Beta 8a ?

Vas is a little low, but everything else is in range. 16ohm though...

Re: Otop 8 driver?
It has higher cone mass and voice coil inductance, which reduces midrange response. You can see on the data sheet that it doesn't have the rising midrange that the Beta 8 has.
Re: Otop 8 driver?
Well darn… thanks for the quick response
