It's the rough green one from the craft store. And yes - the white would be better. It didn't melt any. This was all I could find locally and I hate to pay shipping on something like that. I thought about turning something, but I didn't want to add more weight.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
I wonder how well something like drywall mud, wood filler, or bondo would be at filling and smoothing the texture of the hemisphere. Hmmm.
The cab's looking real good though. Almost time for a performance review!

Question about damping. Found this in the wife's sewing stuff. Seems to be some kind of batting with cloth backing. It is not the 1" thick upholstery batting listed in the instructions. Now, if it were stacked, it would be an inch. Can't beat the price. It is a viable option?
Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
OK - I can be an anal-retentive as anyone, but for some reason I'm not losing sleep over the roughness of the phase plug dome. Each coat of Duratex is helping, but it's never going to be very smooth. Who's really going to notice?

I'd use it.9830Lark wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 5:57 am Question about damping. Found this in the wife's sewing stuff. Seems to be some kind of batting with cloth backing. The real question is: Who's going to hear it? No one.I'm not losing sleep over the roughness of the phase plug dome. Each coat of Duratex is helping, but it's never going to be very smooth. Who's really going to notice?

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
Box has been cooking in the 95 degree cloudless Texas sun for two days. Should be well cured. But, I'll let it sit for a few days before I start handling it for corners, damping, driver, crossover. All the worry about the baffle placement error a week or so ago for naught. That bit is virtually non-detectable.
Finally wrapped my head around driver break-in. Something else I know nothing about. Checked AC voltages from various devices with internet tone generator running at 60 Hz:
- android phone - headphone jack = 0.5 volts
- laptop - headphone jack = 1.5 volts
- laptop - headphone jack ==> powered mini-mixer maxed out = 4.5 volts
- laptop - headphone jack ==> bass guitar input on amp head = at least 10 volts.
So, it looks like the laptop & amp head are my best option. I'm not sure I'd ever plugged a headphone out into a guitar/bass amp guitar input before. I was hesitant to do so, but I started with the gain at zero and crept up from there. The only amp I have with AUX in is a combo with no speaker out. Anyway, I think I'm set.

Any amp will work. Not looking for quality sound reproduction here - just want to make the cone move. Just be really careful with the volume knob.9830Lark wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 3:18 pm Box has been cooking in the 95 degree cloudless Texas sun for two days. Should be well cured. Typically we do break in with a 30hz tone.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
Yes - but I wasn't sure the voltmeter would work at 30 so I was going to set the level at 60, then adjust it to 30 for the break-in.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
The voltmeter is just measuring output voltage - the frequency won't have an effect on it.
You're almost done.....it's a good looking build.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
could you disconnect the combo amp's speaker and hook-up the jack's to the amp leads?9830Lark wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 3:18 pm Finally wrapped my head around driver break-in. Something else I know nothing about. Checked AC voltages from various devices with internet tone generator running at 60 Hz:

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
I thought about that, but there's no rear access so it would mean pulling the driver. Not impossible, of course.
Interesting. I set the amp to 8 volts with the tone generator at 60 Hz, measured with voltmeter set to AC. When I dropped the frequency to 30 Hz, the voltage readout dropped to 2 volts. I left the amp alone and started the break-in.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
That indicates the amp has built in high pass. Most instrument amps do, you wouldn't want them to be flat all the way down. Most amps also have an EQ pre-shape built in.
