Jack 10 Lite Build

#1 Post by 9830Lark »

Bedroom bassist here. Currently using a Ampeg BA108. Happy with it, but it's not enough for much more than playing with an acoustic guitar or non-loud electric. Just scored a good deal on the TC BAM200 compact amp head. Ordered the Jack10 Lite plans.

My plan is do much of the cutting using the laser engraver/cutter at our community woodshop. I'm already reasonably proficient on it. It'll cut 1/4" interior plywood quite nicely. I've gotten a good start on laying out a number of the pieces already. Couple of examples below. Sadly, the bed isn't quite big enough to allow the top/bottom to be cut there. Maybe I can get the layout marking done with the laser on the top/bottom? I just need more time.

Also started laying out cutting using CutListOptimizer.

And starting to search out the driver.

I'm pumped and ready to get after it!

Got some more time to work on the Top/Bottom. Lightburn isn't exactly CAD software. This is as good as I can get it. It should work. Arcs are a bit shy of the baffle line and will etch off the edge of the wood, which won't hurt anything. I'll check it all manually anyway.

-------------QUESTION------------------
Does the PL polyurethane stink?

The reason I ask is that the community woodshop is a wonderfully stocked outfit. Myriad clamps, every woodworking tool you're ever imagined etc. So, assembling there, when I can take a few steps if I need to trim, sand etc. is very appealing. But, they'll run me out if I start stinking the place up. Sadly, here in central Texas, setting up in the parking lot just outside is not going to be a good option until maybe October due to heat.

If it's stinky, I'll just do it at home in the garage and make do. It's not like I'm in a big hurry.

No smell.

But it can make a mess and stay on your hands for a few days.
So wear gloves and put some paper down on your work bench if you need to keep it clean.

Good luck on the build!

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't realize that it's basically a version of the Liquid Nails that I've used many times before.

I'm thinking I'll go tweeter-less, at least at first. So, the best I can understand from the plans, I want the LP filter. (I play a P-bass with flats).

I can't find anything about wire gauge except in the paragraph about bi-amping. There it says 14-16 ga. for the woofer. Is that correct? Stranded or solid? I'm guessing stranded will be MUCH easier to solder.

Speak-on? My amp has a 1/4" jack output, not Speak-on. Surely I can just use a 1/4" jack instead of Speak-on?

Stranded is good. And 1/4" jack is fine. If you can get an enclosed airtight one - even better. No leakage.

I'd rather SpeakOn on the cab where you have the option, 1/4 at the other end. Playing a P-Bass with flats there's no benefit at all to having tweeters.

Thanks. I'll get a 1/4" to Speakon cable on the way. Reading just now, it appears to be safer as there are no exposed connections when the cab end is unhooked.

Doing some back-of-the-envelope calculations on cost:

Plywood - $75 (one 5' x 5' sheet of 1/4", much less of the 1/8")
Driver - $80 (Eminence Beta 10A - Basic)
Plans - $15
Duratex - $30
Crossover, jacks -$20
Corners, handle - $30
Misc - $20

Wow - that's $270. Well - more likely something > $300. Still, at that price point, maybe I'll go for the better driver. Hard anything decent, even the old heavy beat-up stuff, at that price.

If you go with the speakon to 1/4" cable - grab one of these to put in your gig bag.....just in case you ever forget the cable...it will let you use a standard 1/4 speaker cable.

Nothing worse that forgetting a cable at a gig. At least someone will have a spare speaker cable, or at least a guitar cable in a pinch....(yeah, I know you shouldn't - but sometimes you gotta' make the gig happen).

I've cut 3/8" interior plywood with a single pass at slow speed and high power. I'd have to look up the laser specs to give you more information. Now, exterior grade plywood is a different animal. I've been told it is because the glue is much harder when It's set. Googling just now, it seems that the BB plywood is made with exterior glue. Sigh - this will mean more tweaking. Of course, multiple passes are an option, which was your point. I tried to do 3/4" exterior grade (sheathing) and it was impossible. Even with multiple passes it didn't work. The problem is the laser focus is on the surface, so you lose resolution/power as the focus diminishes.

It's a 100W Co2 laser. I'll lop a corner of the sheet and do some test cutting. I can always just use the laser to engrave all the layout lines and move to the power tools if I have to. It'll be a fun trial.

Wonderful, NOT. No interest in seeing my build thread devolve into a discussion of the events leading up to this. Just expressing my frustration.

Looking at BB plywood at the Rockler and Woodcraft stores closet to my home. From the Rockler website....

Yep, we can't solve world's problems here.....but, there is Finnish Birch. Russia isn't the only place Baltic Birch comes from. Just don't get the Chinese stuff - it's junk.

Check a lumber supplier (not HD or Lowe's). Find the places where the local cabinet builders get theirs.
