Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
You probably have a friend or two with a PA. Borrow an amp or even an old powered head. I did my first couple of 3012LF break-ins with an old Peavey XR600.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
Hmm- well the amp head shut off on me during the break-in. I thought it was just heat related - as I realized the laptop was blowing heat right at the amp and we were in the garage. But no, hours later the amp works fine with the headphone out. But, with the speaker out all I hear is a rhythmic click, maybe once per second. I feel awful. It's not an expensive head (TC BAM200), but still. I was being so careful. I'm clueless at this point. I guess I can contact Sweetwater and see what my options are. I've had it for a couple of months.

I would guess that running a constant signal that long may have been more than it could take and the heat fried the output stage. The headphone output comes after the input stage and doesn't ever see the output - thus you can use the headphones but not the speaker outs.9830Lark wrote: ↑Mon May 30, 2022 4:42 pm Hmm- well the amp head shut off on me during the break-in. Good news, Sweetwater maintained their well-earned reputation for customer service. Lots of negativity on TalkBass re- driver break-in. You know what they say about certain body parts and opinions - everybody has one. I'm not experienced enough to have an opinion, but I believe the amp had a problem. It only lasted one hour and the thermal protection circuit should have shut it down if it was too hot. Plus I was only putting 2 volts out at 30 Hz. I ran the break-in it for maybe 9 more hours using the mini-mixer.
I wonder if the DI out is still good on the amp? Not that it matters, as I'm sending it back. Just a curiosity. I have no means for testing it. It would still have some value as a headphone amp and DI box, if so.

Great to hear. Unfortunately, lots of forums are made up of people who are long on opinions and short on actual knowledge. No, you don't have to break in drivers......however, if you want it sound as good as possible as soon as possible - it matters.9830Lark wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 12:42 pm Good news, Sweetwater maintained their well-earned reputation for customer service. For bedroom playing, it might not be that noticeable - but, you've done a great build to this point - might as well finish it up by the book.
If you ever need help or testing of an amp's direct circuit - bring it down and I'll check it out for you. There's a ton of gear at my house for doing that kind of thing.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
My wife let me cut the damping material (insulated batting) on her cutting table using a rotary cutter. Sweet! Not only is it very easy to get straight cuts, but I can do it inside in the AC. Hot glued it all in place, double layered. The batting was easy to work with.
Installed driver, crossover and speakons. I was going to wait a few more days before handling, but I was concerned that the tech rep at Sweetwater would want to listen to the amp and I didn't want to fumble with loose wires while holding the phone.
No problems with them, new amp is on the way. Threw together a nameplate for the inside on the laser.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
All buttoned up, leak checked, corners installed. Feet are on the way. Replacement amp head on the way, so no sound comments just yet. A bit underwhelming using the headphone out from my phone, but that's likely not a fair test.
A few figures:
Weight - a few ounces short of 20 lbs.
Costs:
Wood $124
Driver $108
Finish $39
Electronics $38
Hardware $25
Plans $15
TOTAL $349
My initial estimate was $270, but I was $50 low on the wood estimate and a bit low other places.
All-in-all, it's been a blast. Thanks for the hand-holding and encouragement.

Images....
Pleased with the (almost) flat corners. They didn't force me to do a lot of rounding.

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
That came out looking really good. Great job Lark
Looking forward to your impressions. Enjoy it Lark
Bill's assessment of the condition you reported was spot on. However, I couldn't find any evidence on the internet indicating that amp having any sort of high pass filter. So, I think you actually may have witnessed the demise of that little wonder in real time... who knows why. It should have no problem doing the driver break-in at 30Hz and should play well down low. Although a couple of the threads I read indicated that the tone knobs in the middle 12 O'clock position aren't exactly flat-flat, unaltered EQ.
Looking forward to your impressions. Enjoy it Lark

Re: Jack 10 Lite Build
High passing and EQ pre-shape are things that almost all bass amps have but, along with almost every other really pertinent spec, no company talks about. Pixie dust sells, engineering details don't.
