Re: Dunavin’s T39 build

#16 Post by J_Dunavin »

ahah thanks!

I should of used the router when i had a chance in the last picture. I made a risk assessment judgment call though. I really wanted to use the 39s for a gig and if i would have messed up the plate with the router, it would have been all over.
I've mostly finished the cabs (they did play tonight, see my review) however i found that since the 3012LF is now sitting proud on the baffle that the edge of the speaker interferes with the upper diver flange (the upper part that forms the edge of were the door sits). It wasn't bad though, i chamfered the edge with a Dremel tool, and got it to fit just fine.
I need to now figure out how to get in there and open up the baffle to sit the driver down a bit, even if it was 3/8 vs the full 1/2 would help. Going to have to noodle on that one a bit, would have been easier before I finished off the front. However i go after it, i think i will also need a jig as we also want a smooth surface for the gasket to sit on.
Initial though would be to use something like this, and fabricate a jig for this to sit in the driver hole, horizontally, and somehow spin it.

EDIT... looks like i need a rabbeting bit

It would be very difficult to rout that by hand. I'd make a template with a 12 1/4" or so hole to fit over the baffle to use with a pattern bit like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Whiteside-Router ... 89&sr=1-12

It will have to be thick enough for the router base to clear the cab sides and top. You would do that by making the template from plywood or MDF, then adding scrap pieces to it to make it thick enough. You also need to be sure that the bit is long enough to reach.

Thanks Bill, good advise.
This jig will also need to be angled as to match the woofer baffle.
Should of read the plans closer 🤦🏻‍♂️

No need to angle it. When you've got it ready screw it to the baffle. I figure it will have to be about 1 3/4" thick, so the length of the bit shank is critical.

Ahhhh I see what your saying. The driver won’t be parallel with the driver baffle, but that should be ok in the end.

I'm not sure you do. If you screw the jig to the baffle it will be parallel to the baffle. You could even make it in a half-moon shape, enough to do half the job to make it easier to put in place, then move it to do the other half.

It’s not the exact jig I pictured in my mind, but it did work. Also wasn’t the cleanest cut, but nothing a bit of wood filler and sanding can’t take care of.
I’ll post some of those pictures later. A very thorough leak check will be in order for sure.
I was able to use the disc I cut out to make a half moon the rides along the hole for the driver. Then I made a mount for the router that juuuust fits within the driver hole. The only real negative is that the router rocks a bit. Not quite sure how to stabilize it…. Just go slower I guess.
Pictures are not in order

I have been doing some finishing work, filling in pin nail holes, routering the edges and taking the belt sander to edges that weren't flush. ( i love the belt sander  )
I also added handles to one of the 39s. On back order now... figures.
I was very worried that I would place the hole wrong, when I cut these. Looking back I should have cut them before I started assembling the sides. I could of used sketch up, but i am more familiar with CAD. I drew the side layout, then overlay the handle, to give me a starting point and make sure i didn't cut into the horn path. (disclaimer, these dimensions are for my handle and are not associated with the T39 design)
I also made a template for my router so I could flush the handle down into the side....I need to go buy some more counter sunk wood screws tomorrow.
Most important, leak check passed!

I have been dragging my feet on the mouth braces, I thought about something fancy, but I think I’ll just keep it vanilla.
Box is ever so slightly not square so these took a little trimming to fit nice. PL will fix the rest 😄

PL is SO forgiving, I'd never get one of these to work without it!
