Bryan's SLA Pro Build
Bryan's SLA Pro Build
Hey all,
I'm building a pair of shorty SLAPs for a clients workshop. And before the copyright police arrive, yes I purchased an extra set of plans. Anyway, after having retired from the military, we're all settled in our home and new lives. I love my new workshop. It's small but it does what I need it to do. With that said, I began the 2x SLAP shorty's tonight. I only got about an hour to work, but I was able to cut the sides, baffles, and backs. I have to still do the baffle cutouts, but meh, I have tomorrow. I also had to make another circular saw jig. When I retired, the movers classified all my circular saw jigs as scrap wood and not tools. They will not move scrap. At any rate, I'm excited to be building again!
Key point tonight...the SLAP plans say there are half- moon cutouts for the tweeter barrels but provide no dimensions. If using the Goldwoods, the diameter for that hole is 2 1/4". I'll be cutting that out with a hole saw and finishing it with the jig saw. !

Re: Bryan's SLA Pro Build
Not much to report for last night. Spent an hour in the shop. Made a hand hole jig and cut the hand holes in the sides. Then I cut and attached the braces. No pics though. I didn't have much time so I spent it working.
Tonight I'll be helping a buddy renovate his old bar into a jam pad so I won't make progress on the SLAPs. However, tomorrow night and all day Saturday it's on.

Well shoot, now you need to build a 2nd pair for your buddy’s place
Yaaa some nights it doesn’t seem like much progress but every little bit counts. I spent a good 30 min testing some cuts on scraps for my OT8s to make sure I had it down before slicing and dicing the birch ply.

Re: Bryan's SLA Pro Build
Bryan, that workspace looks fantastic. Perfect for these kinds of projects. It's a rare moment in time that my space looks that tidy, clean, and organized.
Looking forward to seeing this unfold

Re: Bryan's SLA Pro Build
Absolutely! I was thinking I'd use the active JBL rig for practice there and use the BFM rig exclusively for gigging. Then I thought, why not build a permanent BFM PA there for practice and use the JBLs as our personal drink stands?!J_Dunavin wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 5:43 pm Well shoot, now you need to build a 2nd pair for your buddy’s place

Re: Bryan's SLA Pro Build
Thanks, Seth. I really like my workshop to be clean and organized. I find if it's cluttered then so is my brain when I'm trying to build. Weird? I don't know. It's just how I operate.

Re: Bryan's SLA Pro Build
Haha! Very true. I'm working though the kinks of where I like things and how best to keep it tidy. Truthfully, I don't have a lot of organization options. All the cabinetry and shelving was there when I moved in. I've thought about taking some down but for now it's handy.

Re: Bryan's SLA Pro Build
Spent a few hours in the workshop today and made decent progress. I'm not attempting to win any beauty contests here but they are square and correct, I believe. The customer doesn't want to spend any extra on bondo, sanding, duratex, etc.. He wants flat black and doesn't care in the least for cosmetics. In that spirit, I used ply, nails, and romex for the crossovers. Hopefully I'll get more time tomorrow.

Re: Bryan's SLA Pro Build
I don' care what my crossovers look like either - as long as they work. Cabs are looking good.
