Best cab for JBL d140

#1 Post by JohnBee »

Hi my name is John and I live in the UK
I have a couple of JBL D140 speakers from an old Fender Bassman cab that I would like to rehouse
in a more efficient cab or maybe two separate cab's.
This is for use with bass guitar and needs to be old school, think Pbass/Jazz with valve amp so don't
really need tweeters.Any recommendations would be gratefully received.

Hi John - Welcome to the forum. The JBL D140 is pretty old, released around the 60's but I've had a look and can find any TS parameters for it. Being so old, it will most likely predate TS anyway, so unless someone has been back to measure a sample of them, we simply don't know how they would perform in any of the designs.
Built:
6xDR200, 2xT39, 2xT48, 2xJack110, 1xOmni10.5, 1xAutotuba, 1xT18, 1xSLA Pro, 1xW8, 1xW10

Indeed, those are very old speakers.

Here is a thread describing their construction and origin: http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?topic=2555.0

They don't look like they handle a lot of power, maybe 100W or so?
Also likely to be quite tired.

If I was determined to use them, I might try making a single Simplexx 15 without a tweeter and see how it sounds.

I wouldn't use the D140. It was one of the best fifteens of its day, but its day was 50 years ago. They have value to collectors, so I'd sell them.

Thanks for replies,I think they are rated at 150 watts but that could be a bit misleading.
As I had them I thought it might be good to use them but I take Bill's point,
probably better to sell them and get something new.Back to the drawing board!!
Thanks again for your input.
