Re: Dunavin’s OTop 8 build
Well this was a messy endeavor.
Only big suggestion here is to cut just a little big, then test fit, trim a little, test fit and so on.
Not sure how to clamp things in place so I used as little PL as I thought I could comfortably use and am letting it sit.
Too much and not only is it a giant mess, but it’ll slid around a bunch.
This will work… going to need some wood filler , but it’s looking like a speaker

Re: Dunavin’s OTop 8 build
Nice build thread! I can't tell from your pictures but a 23guage pin nailer is the handiest tool. Even if you do use one I can't stress enough for others to get one. Looking forward to your review.
Edit, I see you have built a pile of cabinets...You know the drill.

Re: Dunavin’s OTop 8 build
Ya I need a smaller pin nailer. I do have one and I used it in the bigger pieces, but I was worried it would split these four internal pieces. And I’m not sure how to pinch the middle, where it comes together

Re: Dunavin’s OTop 8 build
While the glue is setting up on the 2nd cab throat pieces, I turned back to the CD horn.
A little out of order according to the plans, but I was worried about the those three angled pieces not being squared up on the horn. I also measured the cabs and one is a 16th tall and the other a 16th short, at least vertically up the middle. I left the horn pieces long, but marked then right at 21”. My plan is to take the sander to them and end up with snug fit.
I also sanded the back smooth and 1/4 rounded the edges. Won’t make a bit of difference, but why not

Re: Dunavin’s OTop 8 build
There's something about the look of the OTop8 that I really like. One day, I will build a set of 6 and replace my DR200's.

Ya they do look really sharp! I’m excited to review them compared to my stack of DR200s.Chris_Allen wrote: ↑Sun Apr 17, 2022 6:30 am There's something about the look of the OTop8 that I really like. One day, I will build a set of 6 and replace my DR200's.

Re: Dunavin’s OTop 8 build
HAPPY EASTER!
Lot's of work over the weekend, almost operational with the OT8s ! Will need a bit of finish work.
Here i cut the hole for the CD driver, and broke the edge a little on the side that is going out to the rest of the horn. Probably won't make a difference, but i am trying to smooth out all the hard edges in the sound path. Gluing them down filling the little gaps with woof filler Here is the rough and sanded ends of the horn.
My suggestion here is to sand a little and hold it up to the cabinet, mark were you need to take some off and sand a little more until it fits.
Also, fit one cd horn per cab, no two will be exactly the same dimension, i mean it's close, but you really want a snug fit here. As you can also see one of my plates is not square. It's ok, but had i used it as my reference, the horn would sit funny. Almost there!!

Re: Dunavin’s OTop 8 build
Back braces, again i made these long and wide when i glued them together. Only after they dried did i cut the 1" x1" strips out. I also left them long and trimmed to fit as both cabs are off by a couple 32nds. Which i nothing really, but when you are trying to get an tight fit, it matters.

Re: Dunavin’s OTop 8 build
I went off the reservation on this one, but I figured it would actually be safer to make the hole for the top hat as an assembly AND it helps ensure the holes are lined up.
Go very slow and clear the chips often. Don’t put a lot of pressure on the horn plate so as to not splinter the edges.
I also glued a doubler in there as I’m going to router the top hat flush. Will be removing some material on the bottom. Probably helped act as a guide as well.
