Should I build TLAH or SLA for TV/Movie/Music?

#1 Post by Fastskiguy »

Hello, I am currently using two SLAs for my TV which plays movies, TV shows, and music. They sounds great....but would the TLAHs sound better? I'm ~12-13' from speaker to listening position and the room is 33' front to back. Or should I stick with the SLAs and build a center speaker? Finally, can SLAs go on the wall like TLAHs can? It would help my WAF situation. Thanks!

Joe

PS does TLAH stand for transmission line array (at) home?

Unless your goal is to build the ultimate home theater, I'd stick with the SLA and build the center and surrounds. The angled TLAH would be nice hung up in the corners, but as far as sound I don't think you'll ever max out your SLA's and still stay married. I just don't see it worth building new cabs. Someone prove me wrong!

Also, what do you have for the low-end?
BFM builds:
XF212
T24 BP102 24"
2x SLA's 6-5" mids, 9- gt-302's
2x AT 14" MCM 55-2421
TrT 5" MCM 55-2421
AT 18" JBL GTO804
2x OT12 flat array
2x SLA Pro 2-Alpha 6's 2-Goldwoods
2x T39 24" 3012lf
Simplex 10 BP102

From the sales page
"The TLAH combines the features of line array, transmission line and horn-loaded enclosures..."

Transmission Line Array Horn is my best guess.

If your bottom end is covered appropriately, I can't see a TLAH being worth the trouble being as you already have SLA's.

You can easily wall mount the SLA's. Google "French Cleat"

What configuration are your SLA's?

Build a center and surrounds. There's no reason why you can't wall hand SLA.

For low end we have one of these

https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Au ... Co-295-518

In this

https://www.diysoundgroup.com/flat-pack ... ofers.html

And we have the two slas and the sub right now. The sla center would be pretty fun to build….that and stick the R and L speakers on the wall and we’d be set. Even if a compelling argument is presented for the tlah….the center channel should probably come first. Thanks!

SLA mains, center channel and surrounds all hung on French cleats. Dual Table Tubas long style sitting vertical for the low end.

You could build a Simplex 18 with that!

Hey Dale, are your surrounds built per the plans? My copy shows them firing straight up at the ceiling.

My own take, two mid bass and two tweeters. I have 8 foot ceilings, so good dispersion mounted about a foot down. They sound great.

That’s great! I’ll give it a shot!

Are the vertical table tubas in the table tuba plans or are those something you came up with yourself?

From the info/sales page
Measuring 15 inches high and 60 inches long, use the Long Style version if the WAF dictates a rectangular shape. Or stand it on end next to the wall or in a corner when floor space is at a premium. Or toss some cushions on it and use it as a combination sub and couch. It's the same TT sound, only the shape has changed.
Also
The Table Tuba, Table Tuba Long Style, Small Table Tuba and Small Table Tuba Long Style are separate plans. You must specify the exact version you want when ordering.
