Which bass amp will you recommend?

Does anybody here know of any decent bass combo amplifiers for under $300? One of my friends wants to learn bass and he doesn't know where to start. He already got an old squier P bass for free off of me, but he doesn't have an amp.

Buy used. I wouldn't go new until I had enough playing experience to know why I'd want one over another. Besides, you get a lot more used amp for $300 than you do new.

I like the Ampeg combos. I find that they need the least EQ tweaking among bass amps and they are reliable. As Bill stated, buy used. You can get fairly new BA 10, 12, 15 models cheap on Craigslist.
