Help! How to Improve Finish on Tweeter Array?

#1 Post by David Carter »

I built a 8-tweeter array for my Omni 10 using 8x1016 piezos. When I cut the piezos, I used a miter saw with an abrasive disc. They cut pretty cleanly, but, on most of them, a little piece of the textured surface chipped off of the front. I have now glued them all together, and the spots where they chipped are painfully obvious. I have sanded the faces with 200 and 400 grit sandpaper as indicated in the instructions, but the chips are still very visible.

Any ideas how to improve the appearance of my array? I'll try to post a pic later so you can see what I'm talking about...
Dave

Built:
- Omni 10 (S2010 + piezo array)
- 2 x DR250 (DL II 2510 + melded array)
- 2 x Titan 39 (BP102 - 14"W)
- 2 x Titan 39 (3012LF - 20"W)
- 4 x DR200 (Delta Pro 8B + melded array)

Take the backs off and then bondo, sand, paint. I did this for the ones in my avatar.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean by "take the backs off." Could you clarify? Thanks.

I use the Goldwood GT-1016, which have 3 screws on the back, allowing you to remove the piezo unit from the actual horn.

OK, now I get it. So you took the backs off all 8 piezos and then worked on the whole big horn assembly? Sounds like quite a job! Did it turn out well?

Nah! Let the sand fall in, it helps diffract the sound. I remember the Holloways of car audio fame using diamond inpregnated diaphrams. Seriously any good filler and some sanding will do the trick. Epoxy is a little harder to sand, but you'll never have to worry about it falling off. Good Luck!

Try standing back about 32metres..........31 would be a bit close so make sure you make it 32.....OK! 8)

And no, you cannot do this in yards either.....

Thanks, Harley! You're always good at shedding a different light on the problem .

I have actually decided that I don't have the patience to fool with it right now. I want my O10, and I want it now! I may come back and work on it at some point in the future, but, for now, I'm just going to live with it the way it is. I will be mounting my drivers today and hopefully moving from the "building" stage to the "playing" stage. I received my new Carvin B800 head yesterday, and I don't have a cab to plug into it until I finish this baby :).
