Any suggestions for a sub and speakers for my PC?

After a whole bunch of years, my Altec subwoofer in my office is motorboating.....this little set of speakers has served me well, but now I need to replace 'em.

I'm not going to build speakers and I don't need anything other than a pair of small stereo bookshelf speakers and a sub.

Has anyone out there bought a setup recently and have any suggestions or likes/dislikes?

It all depends on how much you want to spend. I've had a set of Altec VS4121s for a few years and they're still out there, but rare. I like them There's a newer version which looks similar, but I haven't heard them. I like the 4121s well enough though, and the price is decent ($80-$150).

If you want something really nice, look at the KRK Rokit series. It would be $1000 for the set...but studio quality.

Looks like the Altecs are not in production any more. But, that's what I'm looking for.

Not looking to use 'em for studio quality - just want to listen to stuff on the PC.....without it going puttaputtaputtaputta.....

This probably doesn't help you, but I am running a pair of "L'il Brits" (home built using Sony 5 1/4" and cone tweeters) and a T30 slim under my desk. It is all run off a cheap Lepai 2.1 amp.

.
Here's the new version. Looks like about the same thing, just a new production run with updated parts.

I imagine that sounds good....but, I just want to go buy something and be done with it.

I have a pair of Altec 604s I'm thinking of parting with....

But I'll assume you have a normal sized desk, so that will be a no-go. :D

My Logitech system has served me well for many years - 10 or more I think.....can't remember; too old :)

I guess I could put 'em next to the A7s I have access to also.....

Guess I'm gonna have to actually go the Best Buy and see what they have. I hate going in there....their people are dumber than the ones at GC and Sam Ash.

On a side note.....I had heard that a local lumber yard was now carrying Baltic Birch. That would save me a 60 mile round trip to pick up ply. So, I walked in and asked the guy at the "Pro" counter if they had baltic birch....No, we don't. So, I told him I'd heard they did and was hoping to pick up some 5x5, but thanks anyway......as I turn to walk away he says, "Oh, we have some Russian birch in 5x5."

I looked at him and explained the Russia is IN the Baltics, thus the term baltic birch......he said, "well...I guess I learned something today."

Duh......

Thanks, I'll check them out. I've had mine for probably 15 years or so

Nice... I always got it the other way.

Hi, do you have Baltic Birch Plywood?
-Yes, we've got plywood.

Um, no, I'm specifically looking for Baltic Birch Plywood.
-Birch veneer plywood? We've got that.

Um, no, I'm looking for Baltic Birch Plywood, from Russia with love, no veneer, equal thickness plies...usually in 5x5 sheets.
-Well, we've got both Oak veneer plywood and Birch veneer plywood. Plywood always comes in 4x8, not 5x5. How much do you want?

Makes me think I'm living this commercial...
