Here's what I have access to:



A hot rod dj is coming to town. He just carries around a hard drive. What he wants is to be able to jack directly into the board. No intermediate computer.

for his hard drive, take it's outputs to the bigger better mixer will that suffice?
He suggested I see about finding Pioneer CDJ 9000. "Low end, but will suffice" Uhh they're almost 2k new, 1400 used. Not going to happen.

Suggestions?

Not into that kind of thing myself but the Denon MC2000?

What file format are his songs in?

The MC6000Mk2 looks like it has lots of buttons and lights. Is that what hotshot DJ's are after?

You can jack a hard drive or flash stick directly into that mixer, but how are you going to search for specific songs or mix songs together using that mixer? Doesn't seem like the solution.

I have used before a Numark NDX 400. It has USB jack and flash stick, just RCA it to a mixer. Works but the sound quality on those decks doesn't seem to be the best not sure if its because the low quality of my mp3 files or what. Anyway this deck has a digital readout so you can scroll through and know exactly which song you are selecting on the USB flash stick. I'm sure there are other options out there.

So the Numark NV or Pioneer XDJ-Aero would be much more useful.

If they are looking at the CDJ9000 as "low end"...there is a LOT of room to disappoint.

The Denon SC3900 is worth a look. Up to four players can share a single USB drive. These are $650 street price.

There are some "all in ones" from Pioneer and others that might also work. The XDJ-RX is nice - stand alone, no computer required. It is $1500 street price - but that is two players and a mixer.

What kind of event is it?

Most DJ "shows" have local openers. They usually have the equipment and would love to open for their favorite "hotrod" DJ. Maybe ask around, use facebook, craigslist, talk to audio providers, etc. If that doesn't work then I'd suggest you look at seeing what is available for rent.

In any event, run the outputs from his stage mixer to a mixer somewhere off to the side of the stage or FOH before going to the driverack. You will want to have "executive control" of the outputs.

Waste of money buying for a one off event.
If the support acts (if there are any) don't have what old mate wants/needs, dry hire one.

Then you can have exactly what he wants...

you should be able to rent a pair of "cdj900s", and a "djm800/900/850/750 etc for around 300 (without a "hookup").

I'm not putting on the show. I'm not making any money, it's a giveaway. Nobody is. I am just looking for some kind of solution that I can make work. There are a few of us who are trying to get something started here on a regular basis.

When I worked at RadioShack, we had a phenomenon we called the "Rent-A-Shack customer." These people would come in, buy something (typically either DJ gear or a stereo system), return it a few days later, and say "I didn't need it any more." I ended revoking refund privileges for a few of them.

Now, I'm not advocating anyone do this... but Amazon has a return policy...

I suppose the mixer I am looking at for $149 on sale today at mcm won't work. Sorry no link since I am at a bar and working off my phone. Granted the hotshot won't like it, but I'm pretty low budget.

Email these guys; especially the guy with the nexus. Tell them what you are planning on doing and who the headliner is. Ask them to maybe provide you with contacts of DJ's in the area who are "in the scene". DJ's are usually a pretty tight knit community and they should all know each other. I'm willing to bet that there is a pretty good selection of equipment in the area if you can get a contact going.

None of them very close. 75-150m, but that's a very good idea

If old mate (thanks Grant ) turns up with a HDD full of MP3s, they may be surprised/confused by anything less than a pair of CDJ900s on offer
No doubt they'll want to plug the drive in to one CDJ, link the two via LAN, and probably expect a DJM in the middle too

If you don't want to risk the "headliner" incapable/refusing to play, don't chance it with anything else
