I hate tripods.... But they seem to be a necessary piece of kit for what we do in smaller venues.

Alas, they are for TEMPORARY use.... Not eleven days.

It seems quite excessive that roughly 60lps in weight of static materail would do that much damage.

My own experience is that tripod stands used inside get knocked over, not fall over by themselves...

It was in a gym. Kids play in gyms. That doesn't mean he might not have done something stupid, but whatever it might have been it was less stupid than the adult who left it set up in a place where kids should be able to play without worrying about having large objects fall on them.

I'm usually one to scorn the US for the litigious nature of the society, but in this case I find it warranted.

I try to avoid it but I do use tripod stands but usually put them behind my T39's to avoid this and other annoyances, like bar patrons who decide to re-point my speakers in the middle of a show b/c their standing spot is louder than they would like. Without fail, the tallest person in the room will park their head in front of one of my Otops. I really pity their hearing the next day. I cannot imagine leaving a tripod setup without supervision, especially where children are at play. Adults are bad enough.

I have no kids and in fact don't much care for being around them personally. But, I seriously take offense to this statement. How old are you Ryan? How much do you weigh? Take something your weight and drop it on yourself from 6' OK?

Indeed that tripod and speakers should have been taken down when not in use and certainly when kids are playing around it. Kids aren't stupid but they do stupid things at times. It's up to the adults to prevent them from hurting themselves as much as possible.
My girlfriend is a teacher and sometimes i take my system to her school for a schoolparty. The speakers en electronics are always kept out of reach from the children and even most adults. Because we all turn into little kids when we have a beer or 10 don't we

I read it like the speaker was 10yrs old. The whole article I was waiting to find out what speaker it was.

I'm 25. I remember middle and high school clearly.
I remember kids doing donuts in the parking lot, and being surprised when they slid their cars into light poles.
I remember kids riding skateboards down stairs, and being surprised when they broke their arms/wrists/legs.
I remember watching stupid classmates do stupid things. And then wondering why they happened.
And every time, they happened because they were doing stupid things.
So, yeah, the speaker shouldn't have been there, and they're perfectly within their rights to sue.
In fact, I hope they win, because they should.
But it doesn't change the fact that it was probably the kid doing something stupid to cause the speaker to fall on him.
We all know how gravity works... and it ain't magic.
I'm sorry you took offense. I just call it like I see it.
I hate it for the kid, and his family. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Kids doing something stupid is to be expected. The number one cause of death of males below the age of 25 is stupidity. One of the primary responsibilities of adults is to make it more difficult for the young and stupid to do damage to themselves. They should not make it easier.

My question is "Why didn't the school call the ambulance". Apparently the parents were called to pick him up from school and then taken to the hospital, that's just wrong!!! Kids may be stupid but the adults involved seem not much better.
