SLA PROs - 2xTalls and 2xShorties

Finished up my SLA Pros

I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of the sound. I am actually going to sell off my JBL PRX 615s now that these are complete.

Image

Had a guy down the street CNC cut all the parts for me. It took 1 4x8 Sheet of ply for a pair of talls and one sheet for 4 shorts.

First sides attached.

Image

Internal braces and felt carpet liner for damping. I used a staple gun to attach it.

Shorty model bracing.

Image

Shorty front panel mounting.

Image

Tall front panel mounting.

Progress!! I had to see them all stacked up. :hyper:

Time for crossovers...

Image

I actually designed the crossover plate to be a part of the base plate so that the top hats would have more to grab onto. That would give them a full inch of wood for the screws to bite.

At this point I could not wait to hear one!

Ready for duratex!

1st coat on shorty.

That's all I can show so far. I have to upload more pics from my phone tomorrow.

I did find this pic of me on Facebook. This is just before I put the grills on. I had to try them out. :loler: Everybody loves them!

That looks like a fantastically compact rig.

How much EQ correction did you have to put on the SLAs?

I'll take a pic of my DBX tomorrow. I did quite a bit with a shelf I believe at 2.8k ... I think. I will check tomorrow. I had to tone it down a bit in the middle and then bring it back up in the highs I remember.

Looks really nice, and I like the idea of the short SLA's to fill where needed!

Are they daisy chained with the full ones or running on separate channels? (I don't have the shorts in my plans--I assume they're 4 ohms?)

Great idea on the crossover/tophat reinforcement.

I am actually running the entire thing off an XTI 2002 ... One channel for the subs and one for the tops. I am using the internal limiters on the xti along with the DBX for EQ, limiting and crossover. I love the limiters in the xti '002 series. You can voltage limit everything. I have the t39's limited at 45v and the SLAs limited at 25v. I can really crank it without any distortion at all.

I also installed the 5" tophat in the bottom of each cab instead of the standard 3". They do no wobble at all on the stands. You have to notch the shorty's internal brace for that to work like you see in the picture. That's another reason why I doubled up on the bottom plates with the crossover.

The shorties are in the newest plans just updated recently.

Nice.

How is the shorty/tall connection made when you stack them?

The biggest thing I hate giving up with the DR200 is the wide dispersion. I like the idea of two shorties to give dispersion close in with a tall stacked on top for throw.

I have a top hat in the top/bottom of the shorty.... plus the one in the bottom of the tall. (5" depth for both bottoms)

I use a pc of 1.5" PVC pipe to keep the tall stable on top. I wrapped the pipe with electrical tape on the end you stick into the top of the shorty so that it stays in the hole when I remove the tall box.

This allows me to safely rotate the top box without worrying about then center going off.

I have not built my dr250's yet so I can't compare to the dispersion. I am sure being able to do what I have done eliminates dead spots close to the speakers at least on the dance floor. The bar I mainly play at is L shaped so I do lose a lot in the L. I thought about aiming the left small box outward towards the L branch.

Here is the pipe I use.

Also.. I put 8 of those felt chair sliders on the bottoms to space it out a half inch.

Thank you!

I know your not talking about my shop.. lol. We just moved there and still trying to put things where they go. I managed to build these babies though. Priorities.

DJ.LJ, would/could you weigh your SLAs and post the individual weights, please. I have a pair of OTop 12s that I bought for a song, but your SLAs have me intrigued.
