Starting my own Titan 48 Adventure

#1 Post by bradn7 »

I just got in my Baltic Birch in. My dad has a shop with all the tools that I'll need and best of all he has offered to help out on my build. He specializes in construction. He has made many cabinets in the past and feels pretty confident on the build. He did ask about the possibility of doing Dado joints to make it easier to glue and also make the whole cabinet stronger. What are your opinions on this? We would still use the PL from Locktite to glue them.

Though the dados would be nice they are not needed. My first cabinet was done with my father (cabinet maker) and he also thought dados would be the sure thing for impossible movement.
IMHO it is not needed. The adhesive is very strong when dried.

But on the other hand spending more time in the garage with your dad is time worth spending.

Don't. It's not worth the effort, and if you're off by a millimeter you won't get the second side on. Follow the plans to the letter. The worst screw ups happen when experienced carpenters assume that they know a better way. They may, when it comes to building kitchen cabinets, but they don't when it comes to building speaker cabinets.

+1 on the above. The cabinets are really, really strong when built per the plans. The PL joins and *seals* it all together and you must use it.

I like dadoes for a lot of things, but not these cabs. When you put in the braces, there will be some shifting as the PL expands - as Bill said, you'll never get the second side on.

PL and brad nails is all you need. Except for a few spots where screws are needed.

Sounds exciting :)

Make sure you have your drivers on hand when it comes to time to cut the baffle...

Just a few photos of the wood I was able to procure. My dad was able to order 4x8 sheets of void free Baltic birch so I think that will help out a lot with making the two Subwoofers. I never realized how heavy a sheet that big actually was till the other night trying to pick it up.
I am currently working on uploading pictures to my facebook page that I will link to here. I am really excited to be starting on these finally after reading the forum for nearly 4 years. I am planning on going with the Kappa 15lf speakers. I can't afford the Kappalite 3015lf right now. Eventually I may switch over. So in a week or two I will be making an order on Speakerhardware.com.

The eventual goal is to make 8 Omnitop 12 J-arrays and to start off 4 Titan 48's. I know For outdoor gigs I need a 2:1 ratio of subs to tops but the 8 tops is for loaning out to a school I used to attend and other events. Eventually I will make another 4 subwoofers when money and space makes it available.

I will be keeping a running total going that at the end I would like to post. Any objections? The goal to show price per cab even with recommended drivers and all thrown in.

I am really excited to start these.

Welcome Braden from another Kansan from Doodah (Wichita).

You're gonna love the Titans. They will rumble north central Ks.

Have fun with the build.

Chris

p.s. I hope your shop is heated. We've got cold weather on the way.

Yes. 9 ply 1/2" baltic birch. Got a great deal on it. $52.00 a sheet. After shipping and handling and all that nonsense it came out to 240 and some odd cents.

It's like $60 for a 5x5 sheet up here in Maine.
