Internet in Las Vegas.

Hi all, in couple of weeks I shall be flying from the UK to Vegas for my holiday. We'll be staying at the Luxor which offers free, wired internet. I've bought this wifi thingy to connect an iphone and ipad to the internet wirelessly,
http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Networking/Ap ... -Fi-Router. The wifi thingy has an input that accepts a standard ethernet cable. Would it be safe to assume that the socket on the hotel wall would also be ethernet?

It would be incorrect to assume there is any socket. Even Motel 6 offers free wi-fi. I can't imagine an upscale hotel still using hard wired connections. I haven't used a wired connection at a hotel for ten years.

Apparently not at the Luxor, infact, quite a few Vegas hotels. There is free wifi in various locations such as Crispy Creme doughnuts next door in the Excalibur and McDonalds, but only wired connections in the rooms at the Luxor.

I have, even when there is wifi available. I don't trust wifi, even with encryption, and the Ethernet connection is usually faster anyway because there are so many people on the wifi.
as for the connection at the hotel, it would be an Ethernet connection, but if there is wifi available and you must use it on your devices, just use the house system rather than trying to run your own access point. There are usually so many wi-fi signals in a hotel of that size that it would be nearly impossible to have a small router work with any reliability. as with any public network, use caution and try not to use passwords or give out any financial information over any network that is un encrypted.

I guess Crispie Creme and Mickey D's are making better profits than the Luxor.

Yes. Therefore, cancel the Vegas trip and come to New Zealand instead.

Ha Ha interesting
I came home last week from 10 days in Patong, Phuket, Thailand. We stayed in a four / four and a half star hotel perhaps and it had wifi.
So did a myriad of the little pop up bars all over the place!
Bars for drinking. Getting sharked by the bar girls at connect four, Colosseum Jenga and banging nails into a log with some sort of chisel pointed hammer
It seems that even the seedy bars are cashing in on the western world's propensity for smart devices.
Wi-Fi actually worked as a selling point at a watering hole - the world is a rich tapestry my friends.
Enjoy your adventure to Sin City

Many thanks to you all. Ethernet lead ready for chucking in my case. Would to see New Zealand, perhaps next holiday. Just looked at the flight prices, not to bad actually.

Recently stayed in a nice (not great, but nice) hotel in downtown Chicago. Think the rooms were $200ish a night. Wired internet only with ethernet connections. Hotels only upgrade infrastructure when forced to by competition. If the hotel is always booked up, why spend the money?

Not to mention the wired connection is more secure for the hotel and their bandwidth doesn't get eaten up by outsiders.

I routinely stay at Holiday Inn Express's across the country and have found that most locations have both connection types. I have only had one problem with a public wi-fi connection in Columbia SC but my antivirus software stopped the attack. So yes a wired connection is a little safer than wi-fi and I prefer to use it.

Could be that they would rather have you in the casino than in your room surfing the net...
