Pocket Hole Jigs

Like anything today there is so many different brands to choose from.....

I am a little square eyed from all the youtube videos i've watched to help me pick the right one.

Being UK i wonder if the KREG jigs are any good, they don't seem to have metric measurements, the Trend jig seems dearer but can't decide if it looks as versatile as the kreg....?

Also i cant seem to find out if you can get away with regular woodscrews as the dedicated pocket hole screws seem well overpriced!

I love my Kreg. Makes tuba/titan assembly really quick. No getting under the cab to drive nails.

If you can find the mushroom head screw no reason you can't use another brand. But they are a lo-root thread, much more aggressive than a standard wood screw. IMHO best to use theirs.

Measure smeasure. Just drill a couple in a panel. Big panels a foot apart, little ones just one screw. All you need it to do is hold til the glue dries. It makes an incredibly strong joint even without glue.

Do you use the course or fine thread kreg screws? #8 or #7?

I borrowed one of the Kreg Jigs from a friend a while back and it was very useful. It wasn't a speaker building project, but you could definitely put one to good use for that purpose. I am contemplating buying one for myself.

I got some screws from Lowe's that I used with it, I think these were the ones:

I also have found that these types of screws work well for mounting speakers to baffles.

#7. 1" long for 1/2 ply, not sure what the thread is. I think in the 1" there's only one thread available.

Just wondering where you're looking to buy the KREG jig from. Pocket holes doesn't seem to be a very common technique in Sweden, and I've only found one place to buy anything that resembles a jig.

The companies website has a feature in the top right hand corner to choose a language, as they ship internationally. Check it out: kregtool.com

I have also seen some good deals on ebay, but the shipping could be steep to Sweden.

The Kreg I borrowed was the full size model - I think was called the K4. It sells for about $100 US. They also have two smaller models that sell for around $50 and $20 US. If you are just going to use it for something simple like occasional speaker cabinet building, I imagine the $20 might be sufficient. Has anyone had any experience with this particular model?

I own the $50 tool and just bought the $100 model to speed up production. Either would work. Depends how much time you have.

Silverline have a jig that has 6,8,& 10mm inserts and I paid £5.50 GBP delivered. Doesn't come with drill bits screws or anything but it will be a good trial product at that price.

Yeah I know silverline are crap!

Thing is I bought some garage equipment and its turned out ok, (impact wrench, air ratchets, air line) perfect for the light duty that i needed.

I'll look at getting the Trend or Kreg when I can, but trying to buy things without the wife finding out is a hard job. She doesnt mind me buying things normally but with so much being spent on the house in the last 24 months and with her going on maternity pay its going to be a struggle !

I did find a link to a Swedish reseller, but that landed me in a Norwegian company, with no provisions for shipping outside of Norway. :wall:
