A good deal on a Tascam DM24 Digital Mixer?

#1 Post by Robin_Larsson »

So, I´m looking for a Digital Livesound mixer, to be my first one, and have been looking at mixers like the Mackie DL1608, Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 and similar.

I dont feel that I want to buy an new cheapish analouge board, or even a used one really.
I very much prefer digitalmixers, and I feel that I need atleast 16 mic preamps, and I very much want to have 3-4 prefader Auxes, and an new analouge board capable of that costs about the same as a Mackie DL1608.

And so, yesterday I found an ad for a Tascam DM24 mixer, in what looks to be very good condition, for 470 Euros.
http://tascam.com/product/dm-24/overview/
To me this feels like a very good price, and it seems like this mixer can do all I need and much more, atleast for the coming year or more. The mixer looks to be a bit similar in layout and functions to the Yamaha 01V96 which I have used for a couple of shows, and really like.

So has any one here used or owned a DM24, or know anything about it?
It seems to be more directed towards studio use, but I cant see any real reason that it wouldnt work just as good in a Live setting, and atleast both Tascam and a few Youtube videos agrees.
I do understand that is an older mixer, so probably a bit more delay between ins and outs compared to a new state of the art mixer today, and that it might not be as sturdy as a Live dedicated mixer, I can live with that I think :)

Just to be clear, this probably wont be the Be all, End all digital mixer for me.
I´d like to go for something like a A&H GLD80 or Soundcraft SiEx1 Expression or something along those lines, ideally a mixer without a lot of onboard I/O, with a digital snake instead.
But those mixer are sadly to expensive now, and to much overkill for the livesound gigs I do nowadays.
After all, we are a new company, and have done livesound shows for less than a year now. Livesound is a small part for us, and probably remain like that for the coming year or so, how knows?
But we want to be able to provide it for small/medium shows around here. We are talking shows with maybe 3-500 guests max in the foreseable future.

What say you guys, should I go for the Tascam?

Thanks!

The Tascams are designed to be studio mixers. They're somewhat cumbersome to use live, but they'll work adequately as long as you don't have to make lots of quick changes to the processing.
99% of the time, things that aren't already being done aren't being done because they don't work. The other 1% is split evenly between fools and geniuses.

Brent, Thanks! Good to know! And well, this is a steppingstone for me, before we do any gigs with more well known groups or more highprofile events, we´ll likely get a better mixer anyways :) But definitely something to consider before buying, so thanks again :)
