TLAHx2 for HT Mains

I thought I would start a build thread to commence my build.

My vision:
2 TLAH rectangular floorstanding speakers
I wanted to do 9 of the Goldwood 4" recommended woofers and 12 of the Goldwood 1/2" recommended tweeters. But these are all sold out on parts express.

Since I just bought some toys to play with (soldering iron, plunge router) im itching to get to building.

Even though these Dayton Audio drivers are a little more expensive will they work for the build spec wise? I also like the look of the aluminum cone, this will really pop againsta a flat black cabinet. Im not as worried about the price increase because I want these speakers to be top notch.

Power handling: 20 watts RMS/40 watts max •
• Impedance: 8 ohms
• Frequency response: 60 - 15,000 Hz
• Sensitivity: 84.9 db 1W/1m
• Fs: 60 Hz
• Qts: 0.41

Let me know what you guys think about this driver. Next I will dial in on the right set of tweeters.

Talk to forum member Ian,http://www.speakeressentials.com he is a Goldwood dealer and should have them both on stock. The woofers are cheaper than PE too. :D

speakerhardware.com sells everything. It's in the plans.

The drivers referred to aren't even close on specs.

I just thought I would try something different. I also wanted to order from parts express to avoid the $30 shipping.

TMokay, I'd shoot Ian an email or PM. He's really helpful and has great prices. But don't wipe his stock out before I can finalize my purchase.

Another question about deviating from the plans. Has anyone put any type of lighting in their cabinet? I basically want to put a recessed LED on the front of my TLAH's that will turn on when there is a signal present. I'm not entirely sure how this would be wired in with the speakers and the crossover.

I just like the little light that is on my Yamaha HS80M's that I have in my studio. Just a small cosmetic touch that looks cool.

ok new question and this one will not be about deviating from the plans lol.

I want to make a 9 woofer 12 tweeter TLAH. I plan on using the reccommended drivers at 8ohms each. The 9 woofers will be wired in 3 banks of 3 to have a resistance of 8ohms. But should the tweeters be wired in 3 banks of 4 to get a resistance of 5.3 or in 4 banks of 3 to get a resistance of 10.4?

I will be using the reccommended crossover point at 4kHz which will put the woofers at 14ohms at the crossover frequency.

Except the plans use 4 Ohm tweeters as examples and as far as I know, only 8 Ohm versions of the GT-302 tweeters are available today.

So we have to do some math to arrive at the correct crossover values.

Question about the cabinet dimensions.
In the plans it says that you can lengthen the cab to allow for the 9th driver in the rectangular version. My question is how much can you lengthen the cabinet? My vision would be to have these as floorstanding speakers that would sit next to my HT system. If I could lengthen the cab to 5ft I would not need floor stands and it would give the baffle a nice long look to it. I did a mock up in autocad to show my idea. I also included a spacer at the bottom of the woofer line that would keep the inside dimensions of the cab the same as the regular version. But with that spacer im not sure how it would affect the acoustics of the cabinet because there would be an extra space on the bottom of the cab.

5 feet is fine.

Is the spacer in the cabinet needed or can it all be left open?

You can leave it open.
