2x Titan 48, 18" 3012LF

#1 Post by Boyd »

I managed to get my Titan 48's up to 'usable' status just in time for a little testing and a friends birthday party on the weekend.

Mine are 18" wide squareback, loaded with the 3012LF, built out of 5 ply pine. Still waiting for paint, wheels & corners etc.

The pics are off my phone, so not the best quality.

I'm suitably impressed with the performance so far, pretty astonishing for a pair of 12's. After rolling off a bit of the higher end (say, above 80Hz, -6db/oct) on the bass output channel of the DCX, I was left with smooth defined liquid bass and plenty of it, solid thump, and headroom to spare. Someone here decribed it as visceral. Thats quite a good way to put it.

Test firing the first one outside the garage for a few minutes at moderate volume brought a noise complaint from a block away. Testing the second one the next day brought a few laughs, as the cab inched its way backwards on the smooth concrete floor.

Then I set them up for my friends birthday party in their back yard. They :owned: that party. We only went till 10pm, but one verbal and one written complaint later (not from any of the neighbours within a block or so -we know them) we have written proof of performance! Looking forward to letting them stretch their legs a little in a more remote location.

The down side? Every bar/club system in town (and most of the hire rigs) now sound pretty lame in comparison - be prepared to start making your own fun. There's no going back.

Feels good to know that you have all the overkill you will ever need doesn't it. Now you need to get yourself a pair of tops built to match the performance of the subs and you will be a force to be reckoned with. Just be careful though as more written proof of performance may come your way.

Considering there's about 11 people in the entirety of NZ you've done well in getting people to complain!

The screw count on the access panels is a bit light. There's a lot of pressure in there.

They are T-nuts (with nice big teeth) and socket head machine screws with washers, cranked down tight onto 2 rows of weather strip.

I think this should be OK? I wouldn't put ordinary wood screws in this sparce (if at all). Both the divers and access hatches tested free of leaks.

I enjoyed making the braces (aint nothin lighter than a hole), and it turned out as a good bit of practice - buy the time I got to the mouth braces I was ready to get a little creative. Turned out pretty sweet :D

Strength isn't an issue. With that much spacing between fasteners air could push through the weather stripping at war volume.

Duly noted.

Are air leaks still detectable with the hose pipe technique at war volume?

Are there any other indications of an air leak at high volume?

They were built in one workmates garage/workshop (He's mostly a lighting man), I'm about to pick up my wheels and corners from the other. He's the one with the CV Intense rig (16x 18" quasi-horn subs), and K-Array system (6x 21" DR subs). He might get a wee bit of a shock....
