How to pronounce...

#1 Post by Harley »

ONKYO

We have a new HT amp called ONKYO. The War Office and I are having a disagreement on which way the word ONKYO should be pronounced.

One argues that it's ON ( as in on ) -KY ( as in eye ) - O ( as in Oh )

The other argues it's ONK ( as in Honk ) -YO ( as in "Yo bro!" )

One of the kids ( who should know better than to get involved ) says; ON ( as in on ) - KY ( as in Key ) YO ( as in "Yo bro!" )

Now if you come from a weird accent place ( like Wales, East London Cockney or Scotland ) you won't be much help I'm afraid.

Just so you know here in NZ we'd pronounce SUBARU ( car ) as SU ( as in Sue ) - BAR ( as in a bar ) - Roo ( as in Kangaroo - whereas in US everyone tends to SU ( as in Sooooo ) - BA ( as the BA in Obama ) - Roo ( as kangaroo )

I know this is rediculous when we have starving kids in the world but one of us here has to give in to the other and I'm not giving in without some evidence from you lot.

Oh...no asking which way I pronounce it - that would be unfair. :slap:

I'm surrounded by HiFi talk and that's how I hear it said most of the time.

I side with one of your kids, at least in the pronunciation, not interfering in big dults war games lol.

Since you said you wanted evidence, these might give also you a chuckle:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/av-ampli ... onkyo.html

http://www.forvo.com/word/onkyo/

So after that, you'll be none the wiser and still won't be able to say it in Aussie or Kiwi...

That would be my guess, based on how we pronounce Tokyo.

On key oh.

At least that's how we pronounced it almost 30 years ago when I was selling Hifi gear. It was good then and is still good now.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

Used to be the bees knees. Heard a few complaints lately though...

I think they might be making a sub par unit to capture the bottom of the market though and that might be the problematic tier...
