powering 4 DR200s and 4 tuba 30s all 18 sound.

Hi

Building a new PA system mostly for DJing. I have a wood shop and i am really taking my time to build my tuba 30s and DR200s right. I chose the 18 sound drivers because i want the biggest punch i can get from these boxes. i use a pioneer DJM 800 mixer with xlr cables right to my DBX drive rack 260. So i have a pritty clean signal path. The next question is power amps. I was thinking about using a Crown XLS drivecore 1500 for the 4 DR200s and a Crown XLS 2500 for the tubas. I was also looking at possibly getting a used Crown marcotech for the tubas because my experence is that the marcotechs have great damping factor.

Thoughts? What do you think of my config? i like having extra headroom. Will the XLS drivecore 1000 do the trick? Will the XLS 2500 be enough for the 4 tubas?

all opinions welcomed.

Sounds like you're going with all top of the line gear...very nice.

Don't worry about the damping factor...it really won't make a difference. Any decent amplifier like the xls series is fine.

I agree with Ryan.

I use an XLS 1000 for my DR250's. Run at war volume they are insanely loud, or I'm getting old.
It's not stated in the plans, but consensus is max voltage for the DR250 is 40V, so the DR200 would be much the same. Making the 1500 a good choice.

i guess the 18 sound drivers can take 60 volts. i am not sure if the Crown XLS drivecore 2500 will do the trick. The specs say 775 watts at 4 ohms. Is there a way to convert the amp wattage output to volts?

Thanks!

Randall

There sure is!

Input any 2 values, hit calculate to get the rest.

Remember, for your subs, to add 2 ohms/cab to nominal driver impedance, then halve if running in parallel each channel...

Thanks for the tip.

Looks like the Drivecore XLS 2500 will not really push the voltage i am looking for. I need 60 volts at 5 ohms from what i understand. Maybe the XTI4002 would be the better choice?

Using the calculator I get 720 watts into 5 ohms at 60V.
Leaving the Crown XLS 2500 with 50W (ish) up it's sleeve.

Not much left over, I know, but I had the discussion a while back, the gist of which is, if you're brick wall limiting to a certain voltage, then that's all you need from your amp. If you've limited properly, you should never see above, in your case 60V, at the amp outputs.

Headroom still exists when you're below that voltage, but once you're at war volume, that's it.

So, the XLS 2500 should be good...

xti4002 gets a plus 1 from me. max voltage on the amp is about sixty two volts though. i usually run the limiter around 58 volts.
