What's a good all round mic to use in front of a combo guitar amp/speaker cab to go to the mixing desk?

The standard is a Shure SM-57. Other popular choices include the Audix i5, and the Sennheiser e906. The e906 is particularly nice because it's side address, meaning you can dangle it by the cable and it will be on-axis, so no stand required.

Sennhieser e609 is really good cabinet mic. It's a side address that lays flay against the grill, so you can hang it and it's still on axis.

Of course, there's always the tried and true Shure SM57.

Good Lord, Brent...we damn near said the same thing (you beat me by a minute). Except that I'd go with the cheaper e609 - you can't beat it for $100.

But I might add Harley, that large diaphragm condensers are nice too, even for a live setting.

I did a show where the guitarists amps (he had a stereo output) were located aft of the stage firing away from the audience. I might add that his was an outdoor show. Anyway, we used a large diaphragm condenser on each cabinet. It made the guitar sound in the pa rich, warm and "massive" with an amazing "open" feeling.

Condensers are often used in the studio, but they can be used in live settings just as well.

I don't have the best ears for guitar tone but Behringer XM8500 does fine, 65 bucks from Beggs last time I looked.
