Earlier this year I built a TT for my movie watching, and found out I was a bit more of a bass lover than I originally realized. That poor TT has had one heck of a workout, and I felt it was time to give it a "brother" to lower the demand on the original unit and hopefully even out the response in the listening area.

This TTLS will be using the Tang Band 8" woofer and Dayton 240 amp. The combo has been breaking in for 40 hours (on again-off again). Today I picked up the 1/2" Auroco plywood (2 sheets) and once the novocaine wears off (dentist work this AM), I'll start cutting plywood. The directions have been read, read again, and read a third time. The only change I plan on making is to make panel #6 removable so that I have easier access to the woofer mounting screws. This was the only thing that caused me grief on the first TT as the mounting screws at the back took an inordinate amount of time to get started.

An old college buddy will be showing up this weekend, and I'm putting him to work helping document this build.

Wow I haven't seen a portable CD player like one of those for years...

I'll be paying close attention to this as I intend to make a pair of the long style TTs.

88h88, yep, that is an old Sony, manufactured date March 1990. Still works perfectly

For those building the TTLS, please note the length shown for panel 10 for the cutlist program is incorrect (page 6 of directions). Add 10" to the dimension shown. All other panels check out OK. Also, I noted that althought the instructions show panel 6 fits to inside of panel 1 throughout the build, the layout shown on page 6 shows panel 6 fit to end of panel 1. Don't get confused by this as I did. The Sketchup model shows the instructions to be correct, i.e. panel 6 fits to the INSIDE of panel 1.

This afternoon I was able to rip the 4X8 sheets down to several lengths of 17" wide, 15" wide and a scrap piece at 13" wide. Since my help won't be here till tomorrow PM, I used my hand held circular saw to rip the sheets lengthways 1/4" oversize, then sent them through the tablesaw to get them to their final width. The top and base were cut to length and the layout drawn on the base per the drawings. On the other 17' width pieces I went ahead and drew centerlines down the entire length to help with lining up and bradding the interior braces. Holes were drilled per the drawing for laying out the brads/screws and time to call it a night.

As usual, Bill's instructions are great and I'm sure will result in another great subwoofer.

pppft, that thing is positively newfangled compared to mine. It was bought 2nd hand in 1987

This morning, it was time to get that first panel on. The plywood has started to warp, so I knew it was going to take some "persuasion" to get that panel flat and lined up correctly. I made several "alignment boards" per the plans and with two carpenter squares and some clamps, got that panel aligned. Once aligned, I took the screws out of the end of the base panel and removed the appropriate clamps so panel one could be lifted off the base panel.

My first bead of PL went on kind of heavy as it was from the tube I used to build this spring, but the consistancy was right. I reinstalled panel one, reclamped it and rescrewed it to bring the joints tight. Out comes the brad nailer and panel one is bradded in place. All clamps and screws removed except the two side braces.

I took extra time in doing this to make sure everything was as square and lined up as I could get it, since a goof up here is hard to fix.

Look at those cauls, imprint them on your brain, go to the shop and cut some out. NPlNdd.

Tom, I think I can draw them up and make them if I can figure out how long one leg of the caul is. It appears they are about 1" or 1.5 thick, so if I cut 3 out of the ply I am using and laminate them together, I should be good to go. Any idea what that leg length is?

Since they are basically built out of scrap, build different lengths. I suggest 6", 12" and 18". This would be something I would recommend using MDF to build. Use 1/2" or 3/4", cut out squares of the desired side leg length, laminate the squares together, then bisect the squares corner to corner. Cut the clamping surfaces and remove the corner apexes, and you are done.

I made some out of scrap ply (5/8" 4 ply that was used on top of pallets) that were approx. 12" with long legs.

I apologize for the late reply and break in the build, but I got a call from my brother that my mom was in bad shape in Florida. Threw some cloths in the car and was in Florida at 1:30AM the next morning. She passed the next day, so have been dealing with that. Will get back to the build next week as building stuff is very theraputic for me......
