Check out those Genelec's in the background. Thanks for the insightful links bro. You can pick out the difficulty he has in trying to convey his knowledge and experiences (ie. his teaching method). As admirable as the school of hard-knocks may be, we'll never see someone successfully "feeling" their way through DSP design and/or implementation. The practical buck stops at the electron.

If only it had been mic'd better. Can see how difficult it is for him to convey things, especially when the host next to him looks bored out of his skull the whole time. Know what he means about traktor killing audio hopefully the settings suggested should improve that.

Also massive +1 on a good speaker system should be able to handle live and playback. The whole idea is to faithfully reproduce what you feed into it so why the hell should one system be better for live or a certain genre? If you need it louder add more boxes right?

He talked a lot of sense for a man with a braided rat tail, the interviewer was awful but thankfully his interjections are brief. He obviously knows his stuff and hopefully the people attending learned something with the way he was talking about signal chains and acoustically treating rooms whenever possible. Also he's another person in the industry (one of few) that doesn't like line arrays and feels there's something missing when they're used.

What I took from the talk:

Quality of input is paramount (no compressed shit) along with the equipment it is played through, signal chain needs to be kept as clean as possible with plenty of headroom for loud and quiet, sound system (non line array) needs to be EQd to perfection, DJs needs to have their hands smacked whenever their mixers hit the red, fuck itunes, people need educating on sound...

Part of what he is trying to communicate is that some Engineers do not discern the difference between live and playback systems.
Part of what he is saying is that there is no one type of system that does it all.
If your mindset and background is based on certain acoustic and psychoacoustic experiences you will tend to design,tune and mix your system accordingly.
Yes you can take a bunch of boxes and eq the heck out of them so they measurably flat and they will be loud if you have enough of them.
But what about FIDELITY?
Live sound is about reinforcement and playback is about reproduction.
But they are both supposed to create a bridge between the performance/performers and the audience and elicit an emotional response.
If thats not happening then you/I/we/they are doing something wrong.
