Back in the "day", the theory of amp placement was simple; More than 10-15 feet from the speakers was a no no. I'm curious with today's technology though if amps can be placed by the FOH area? I guess there's not really any need for them by the mixer but I've seen several setup's where the mixer was placed on top of road cases the amp's were in.

As long as you use sufficiently sized cable there is no problem running speaker level over a slightly longer distance. I ran 16 gauge wire when I first set up simply becasue it was what I had on hand... everything worked just fine. I've upped to 13/4 now that my DRs are biamped, and my runs are 50-100 ft with no trouble. You can lose some voltage with long runs, just make sure that you aren't losing too much (there are some calculators online to help figure this out). The farther you run, and the smaller the wire, the more voltage you lose.
