one question:

Would different voltage preamp input not cause the output voltage to be different? Say the amp was set with a test tone and marked for 56v on the output. Than I plug in another eq to the input that has a higher voltage preout on it, would it not allow the amp to go over the 56v limit that I had set previously?

Yes. That's why you need to gain set the whole rig. Each piece individually for it's max before distortion, then chained in sequence, adding one at a time.

I figured it but didn't want to assume in case I was missing something.

What do you mean by gain set the entire rig? Add all the pieces to the setup and dial in with all dials set to the maximum of where you will be taking them and than tailor the output to give you the voltage you need? So when all said and done there is no way you can go over the measured output voltage because you have dialed it in with all equipment run at full tilt?

yes, pretty much exactly :)

Yes, full tilt needs to be the spot where that piece of gear starts to clip.

To see when the gear starts to clip the input signal should I be using my Oscope or is there an easier way?

if you have an o-scope then thats the way to do it. If you want a quick and dirty way to do it and have a left over piezo tweeter, then follow the instructions here http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/1143529-post1.html except wire the piezo to an xlr instead of an rca

Isn't it right that the limited is supposed to be inserted just before the amplifier, as last piece in the signal chain? In that case no other equipment will be able to push the voltage any further(presumed its a brickwall with infinite ratio)... Correct me if im wrong

In the advanced speaker processors(dcx, driveracks), are you able to choose in What way you insert the effects?
