Chart - Comparison of Amps -Model, wattage, price, weight

#1 Post by Bruce Weldy »

As there are numerous inquiries about amplifiers, wattage, prices, etc.......here is a chart with the most widely used/discussed models.

These are all available new (still some Crown 202-802 out there, if you can find them). This data is current as of today. All was culled from manufacturer websites and retail sites. All prices are internet, which typically is MAP. You may find them cheaper - this is just a guide.

X means that bridging is not an option.

If anyone wants to re-sort this to compare by any column, send me your email and I'll send you the Excel Spreadsheet.

If this is helpful, it could be updated regularly and used as a resource for those who need it. Possibly moved to a better place on the forum?

A little clarification....

I didn't include high-end amps like I-Techs because anyone that is looking at those doesn't really need this info. I know a lot of older Behringer models are in use and we could certainly add older amps for those looking in the used market.

In some cases (QSC and Begringer) I went with the more conservative of wattage ratings. Some manufacturers give RMS and Peak, others do measurements at different THD ratings, some at 1k and 20-20k......I went with the lower rating whenever I encountered this.

I also left out 8 ohm bridged ratings....can't imagine why anyone would ever bridge at 8 ohms.

All the wattage and weight info came straight from the manufacturer's website (except for some of the Peavey stuff - their documentation stinks on the website - can't get online manuals and their specs only give 2 ohm ratings). Prices came from Musician's Friend, American Musical Supply, and Sweetwater.

Sorry about the second chart....it's the same thing, can't seem to get rid of it.

Very useful indeed. I have a similar sheet, it also has columns for:
  • depth
  • # units height
  • weight
  • $ per watt into 2, 4, 8 ohms
  • damping factor
The latter varies from well below 200 to about 600 for the amps I listed. Not sure at what point this becomes a potential issue, probably when running long leads into heavy subs?

You might want to add the Behringer EPQ amps. The 304, 450, 900 are still not available here, the 1200 and 2000 have been in stock for some time now.

Has anyone seen or heard reviews of Peavey IPR 4500 DSP?
I have heard good stuff about the IPR 1600(nonDSP), but not sure if Peavey has shipped the big guns yet.
I really like my XTI 4000, but I wouldn't mind shedding a few more pounds and curious about the DSP. It would be killer to adjust the DSP wirelessly on the fly.

Nice work posting the spread sheets.

I swear that when I went to their website, the only amps they had listed were the EPX and the INuke that are listed as coming soon.....just looked now and all the others were there. Guess I'm an idiot.....I'll try to add them soon.

Code: Select all

EPQ900 2 390 245 257 1 4,9
EPQ1200 2 220 425 250 257 2 6,7
EPQ2000 2 220 700 500 257 2 7,0
Here's my info. Could be outdated, I thought published specs have changed a bit over the past year. Type, channel count, damping factor, watts into 4/8 ohm, depth in mm, height in units, weight in kgs.

iNuke is new for me, sounds more like a cold war app for smart phone to me. I'm off to the Behringer website for a read, too.

Amp damping factors above 20 are superfluous.

Thank you Bruce for posting that. Well put together and helps a lot. Sadly, this is the one area that's going to kill me financially. Amps are so bloody expensive if you get something that will produce a decent amount of power.

Plenty of people selling off their old gear for some new light weight amps. If you don't mind lugging "old iron", a little patience can get you great deals now that class D has become affordable even at entry level.

Although it's not as simple as flipping a switch, the IPR amps can be bridged.

The manuals for any of the IPRs that are currently being shipped are now available on the Peavey website.

Thanks Bruce.
Saves a lot of research having the figures all together in one list.

Are ALL of these ratings RMS?
I think Crown and Peavey (being US based) would be quoting RMS, but Behringer (who are renowned for dodgy practices) may be quoting Peak or Music. Or maybe quoting RMS but at a higher THD.

Is there any chance of getting these great charts updated with current models?

wow....I forgot that I had done this....

The second post explains the power ratings.....

If I can find the time, I'll try to update it. Bump it again if you don't see it in a week or so.
