I have a Panasonic XR57 receiver and a Crown XTI1000 amp to drive my sub. I have an RCA -> XRL adapter and I do get some output from the sub. However, it is very quiet / low levels even when I turn up the XR57. I have to turn the crown up a lot to get decent volume when it should be quite low with the THT.

Anyone have any ideas? It could be something wrong with my xti setup as well. I tried bridge / both channels and I have the same issue.

The sub works with another amp and the same receiver.

Also, as I increase the volume it the sub makes a noise that isn't the same as the test tone, like it cuts out for a fraction of a second? Hard to explain but is this normal?

Went ahead and ordered an art cleanbox.

Same issue I had with mine. SA-XR57 with a Monoprice RCA to XLR cable to Behringer DCX to Crown K2.

SA-XR57 sub level: 10 (default)

DCX input gain +7db

Crown K2 gain knob wide open...had to defeat the built-in stand by circuit because input signal was still too damn low (as far as the K2 was concerned) ..a fraction of a millivolt for most evening listening. Well below "pro" levels. My cable runs are less than a foot, so I get by luckily.

DCX has a balancing circuit built in to the I/O stages for handling just this type of issue hence the hot-wired cable works just fine. I don't know what provisions the XTI has.

Clean Box will definitely give you a strong enough signal, but I can't help but think you could've gotten by with a passive balancing transformer.

I have no idea what the sound you describe could be from.
